Three militants have been killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in Pakistan’s restive province of Balochistan, reports say.
According to the security sources, the shooting started on Saturday after Pakistani forces surrounded a militant compound in Panjgur area, in the west Balochistan, during a search operation conducted by Pakistani security forces in different parts of Balochistan’s northwestern district of Mastung.
The sources said at least 17 militants were detained in the operation.
The military operation, which began on Friday, comes days after an explosion ripped through a bus carrying Shia pilgrims in the restive Mastung district, killing over two dozen and injuring several others.
On January 23, a number of Pakistanis held sit-ins across the country, in protest against unrelenting deadly attacks targeting Shia Muslims.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the attack in Balochistan, as well as other deadly instances of violence in the country.
Pro-Taliban militant groups in war-wracked Pakistan have launched a bloody campaign against the country’s Shia Muslims, often targeting their religious gatherings.
