Pakistan’s electricity imports from Iran double

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s import of electricity from Iran has doubled after enhancement of the capacity of transmission lines, spokesperson of the Ministry of Water and Power said on Tuesday.

All the power received from Iran is being supplied to Makran division including Gwadar Deep Sea port, Gwadar district, Turbat, Panjgore, Mand and other areas of the division. The supply makes Makran division free of any load-shedding and actually makes it surplus in electricity. The supply increased to 70MW on February 26 from the earlier 35MW.

The electricity supply will help the division meet its demand for the next five years, added the spokesperson.

Federal Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar said the government is taking all steps to facilitate the people of Balochistan. Qamar said that industrial, commercial and domestic consumers of the area will benefit from this power, and increase economic development in the area.

The spokesperson further said that the overall demand of the Makran division is 55MW in the summers and 40MW in winters. The Quetta Electric Supply Company was doing 10 to 12 hours load management in all the areas of the division in the summer season due to the shortage.

Two separate projects of electricity import from Iran of 1,000MW and 100MW are in the final stages and construction of transmission will be started as early as possible, the spokesperson added.
