Pakistan rejects Indian allegations

ISLAMABAD (July 13 2006): Pakistan on Wednesday rejected as "baseless", Indian allegations about infrastructure of terrorism on Pakistani soil and in Azad Kashmir. "Pakistan does not tolerate terrorism and is in the forefront of international efforts to fight this menace," a statement released by the Foreign Office said.

The Foreign Office also rejected Indian assertion that Foreign Minister Khurshid M Kasuri had drawn any linkage between Jammu and Kashmir dispute and the Mumbai blasts.

"At no stage during the interview did the Foreign Minister talk about a connection between Mumbai terrorist attack and the Jammu and Kashmir dispute," the statement said.

Pakistan's reaction came in response to a statement by Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Foreign Ministers interview with a foreign wire service in Washington.

Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said "the Foreign Ministers remarks have been misreported" and pointed that he had "emphatically and unequivocally condemned" the terrorist attack in Mumbai yesterday.

The spokesperson said the Foreign Minister while speaking about the peace process between Pakistan and India, in another context, stated that a number of confidence building measures were in place and the atmosphere between the two countries had improved. In this regard he had mentioned that "the time, therefore, was right to address all outstanding issues including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute."

Ms Aslam said there was nothing to suggest any connection between the Mumbai blasts and the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

The spokesperson told a private television channel that Azad Kashmir was an open area where a number of international relief agencies including the UN operated after the October 8 earthquake and it was ridiculous to say that there was any infrastructure of terrorism. She said the issue of Jammu and Kashmir was an international dispute and it had no linkage with the issue of terrorism in Mumbai.
