Pakistan Railways earning Rs158mn from leased land

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has leased out around 1000 acres of its land in various cities including Karachi Peshawar and Lahore and generated revenue of Rs. 158 million.
An official in the Ministry of Railways told APP that the land was leased out for the purpose of commercial,agricultural, material stocking and parking purposes.

On the directive of Minister for Railways, Khawaja Saad Rafique, an inquiry is being initiated to investigate the leases which were given on lower rates.

Pakistan Railways, he said has taken several measures and plans to convert the railways land into profitable ventures to overcome financial crisis of the organization.

In this regard, he added that a notice has also been taken about leased land which are being utilized for purposes other than those intended for.

About the ownership of railways land, the Supreme Court has given a clear directive to the provinces to transfer these lands to Pakistan Railways, he remarked.

Regarding installing gates at various railways crossings, he said that Pakistan Railways has banned any manned or unmanned level crossings.

Further, he said that over or under head bridges can be constructed by provincial governments or local governments in order to avoid movement of traffic and people on the railway tracks.
