Pakistan's parliament has approved a law guaranteeing basic rights for transgender people in a country which sees prevalent discrimination.

The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) act was passed by a majority in the National Assembly in Islamabad.

The law bans discrimination against transgender people by employers and business owners as well as outlawing harassment in public places or at home.

It also allows transgender people to self-identify as male, female or a "third sex" on official documents, such as passports or driver's licenses.

Transgender people routinely face severe discrimination in Pakistan.

Some "hijras," the term given to transgender people, intersex people and eunuchs, are forced to work as sex workers, dancers or beggars.

The new law also establishes safe houses for transgender people, as well as providing medical care and psychological counselling.

Having passed through the National Assembly, it now needs to be signed into law by the country's president, Mamnoon Hussain.

Last year, Pakistan's transgender community was counted in the national census for the first time, which recorded 10,418 transgender people in a population of around 207 million.

However, the charity Trans Action Pakistan said the figure was likely to be a significant underestimate.

It believes there are at least half a million transgender people in the conservative South Asian nation.

Earlier this year, a woman disowned by her family became the country's first transgender newsreader.

Marvia Malik, 21, said she had received an “overwhelming” positive response to her first appearance.

So, I've got a question... are these "transgender" rights only for those who were naturally born an actualn gender problem or does include those san francisco kinda transgenders as well who were born as normal males but due to their homosexual tendencies, decided ti take hormones and surgeries and become transgenders???

If it's only for the former then I support it and am very kind and merciful towards such people, baycharay agar paidaishi deformities hein to unka kia qusoor, they should have those rights and should be honored and supported. But if it's the latter then I absolutely cannot support that crap..

Yes thats the thing what im seeing happening, they are paving ways for those who want to change sex by choice. Also many transgenders who cross dress and make money off it are actual men pretending to be transgenders.

Once i was reading abt transgenders in pakistan and i found put that majority of transgenders arent actually people born with deformities. Many of them are crossdressed men or those kids who were kidnapped in childhood and their privates were chopped off by trangende rmafia to use them as trannies.

Also i recall previously these orgs and one lawmaker had tried pushing for transgender persons rights in last two three years, it had clauses to protect "by choice" transgenders righta addded cleverly to it . But the bill didnt get passed then , now regarding this bill i dont know whether it still encompasses the same previous clause or not.

Trangenders rights she be granted but to those who were born with deformities not fake ones which can eaisly be verified. Secondly a sex change undergoing person should Never be regarded as transgender.
