KARACHI: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has urged the Director Trade Organizations (DTO), ministry of commerce to have mandatory trade intelligence cell (TIC) in their respective associations for the benefit of their members, a statement said on Monday.
Zulfikar Thaver, president of UNISAME, said that the importance of information cannot be denied as it is the most important requirement of trade. All the progressive countries of the world have made it compulsory for their trade associations to have a full-fledged TIC, he said, adding that the TIC answers questions about the respective trades online and the entrepreneurs get guidance to take decisions in the light of information received from the cell.
The trade bodies also have advisory cells to guide their members. They also serve as forums to voice their concerns, he said.Thaver said: We need to revamp the trade bodies act to make it service to members-oriented rather than a mere formality. What good is a trade body if it is not concerned about the growth of its members and does not strive to better the conditions and voice the concerns and resolve the issue, he said.
A trade body needs to suggest remedial measures to the ministries and submit proposals for the betterment of trade in the face of challenges. He regretted that the government departments concerned do not have the relevant information and are ill-informed about the important information about the size of the crop, the arrival of the new crop, its availability, the expected price, the demand-supply position and other useful information about the neighbouring countries and their strategy.
The trade associations are collecting handsome membership and annual fees and charges but are busy in politics and their committees are looking after their own vested interests and have not developed a system to provide day-to-day information to their members who are eager to know what is happening in their line of trade, said Thaver, adding that the advisory cell at the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) also lacks information and is ill-equipped to serve the exporters.
