Associated Press Of Pakistan ( Pakistan's Premier NEWS Agency ) - Pakistan, India agree to restore trade

ISLAMABAD, Sep 7 (APP): Pakistan and India have agreed to restore bilateral trade immediately as part of confidence-building measures, said Pakistan’s Trade Secretary, Salman Ghani. While talking to a private news channel, he said “Both secretaries agreed to restore bilateral trade immediately.” Pakistan would do all it takes to increase trade between the two countries, Ghani said.

He pointed out that he had held an open discussion on trade with Indian Trade Secretary Rahul Khullar.

Trade ties between India and Pakistan will be in the greater interest of the business communities of both countries. “Traders on both sides want better trade ties. Both sides want an increase in exports,” said Ghani, adding that once the composite dialogue process resumed, all issues would be brought to the table.

Indo-Pak trade not suspended after 26/11: Indian official

Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan

NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday expressed surprise at a an official Pakistan news agency reporting that both countries had agreed to restore bilateral trade, with a senior Commerce Ministry official saying trade between the two countries had never been suspended after last year’s terror attacks in Mumbai.

An External Affairs Ministry official also disputed claims of bringing trade between the two countries to a standstill, adding New Delhi has maintained “limited contacts”. He said only official and diplomatic engagements had been halted following the terror attacks to send Islamabad a “message” to act against the accused. “India and Pakistan snapped trade and travel ties during Operation Parakaram in the aftermath of the attack on parliament. However, this time, a conscious decision was taken to ensure that people-to-people contacts were not affected,” he said.

Quoting Pakistan Commerce Secretary Suleman Ghani, APP had claimed that both sides had agreed to restore bilateral trade after a meeting between Ghani and his Indian counterpart, Rahul Khullar.

However, trade bodies in India have said that trade between India and Pakistan reduced by almost 60 percent in light of the terror attacks and the global downturn. According to a study conducted by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, bilateral trade during the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2010 has been projected at $900 million, compared to $2.2 billion in the previous year.

The Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry is sending a senior delegation, which includes top Indian corporations, to Pakistan next month to attend to the sliding trade.
