Pakistan can generate 59,796MW hydropower

Islamabad—Pakistan which is the electric power gasping country has the potential of hydro generation of 59796 MW which can be attainable, reveals the latest presentation of Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB) of which the copy is available with Pakistan Observer.

The PPIB came up with the said presentation in the committee of Senate on Water and Power saying that the country is rich of the hydro generation out of which Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa has the potential of 24736 MW, Gilgit-Baltistan 21125 MW, Punjab 7291 MW, Azad Jammu and Kashmir 6450 MW and Sindh 193 MW. However, 14 hydropower projects are currently being processed by PPIB with the help of private sector that will generate the cheaper hydro generation of 5416 MW, out of which 4 projects of 1760 MW are bring processed in KPK, one project in KPK and AJK of 150 MW, 8 projects of 2786 MW in AJK and one project of 720 MW in Punjab.

It also unveiled that five hydropower projects being financed by private sector that include New Bong hydropower project of 84 MW will come on stream by May 2013. The Patrind project of 147 MW on Kunar river will start functioning by December 2016, Gulpur of 100 MW on pooch river will generate electricity in June 2017, Suki Kinari of 840 MW in December 2018 and Kohala hydropower project of 1100 MW in December 2018 will start generating electricity.

The top official of PPIB told Pakistan Observer that the cost of New Bong Hydropower project is $ 215 million and its tariff is 8.543 cents per unit and this project will start generating electricity of 84 MW in May 2013. To a question he said that the financial close of the said project was achieved in December 2009 and the construction work has completed by 85 per cent.

Mentioning about the Kohala project of 1100 MW will be completed by December 2018 at the cost of $ 2.498 billion with tariff of 8.142 cents per unit. About Gulpur Hydropower project of 100 MW, the PPIB official said that this project will be completed in June 2017 with the cost of $ 158.66 million will generate electricity at the rate of 5.42 cents per unit. He said that Patrind hydropower project of 147 MW will be completed in December 2016 and generate electricity with the tariff of Rs 7 per unit for next 30 years time.

The presentation also divulged that investment in the power sector had dwindled manifold because of the factor of circular debt and local banks are not more inclined to provide credits to the private sector which wants to invest in the power sector. Foreign lenders are also shy of giving the loans in power sector because of the circular debt.
