Pakistan and Australia on Tuesday reiterated their desire to intensify efforts to promote bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, economy and defense.

At a meeting between Pakistan's Minister for Defense Ch. Ahmad Mukhtar and the visiting Australian National Security Advisor Dancan Lewis, views were exchanged on different subjects, according to the official news agency APP.

The meeting deliberated upon Pakistan's anti-terror contribution, defense cooperation, and the security environment of the region with special reference to Afghanistan.

Mukhtar said that Pakistan had been successfully waging war against terrorism and had defeated the terrorist elements in the districts of Malakand Division in North West Frontier Province and other Tribal Areas with greater public support.

He said Pakistan's economic, social and industrial sectors suffered colossal losses due to suicide bombings and spendings on anti-terror operations.

Lewis said that his country was conscious of Pakistan's efforts and sacrifices and deeply acknowledged its counter-terrorism efforts.

He informed the minister that his country had strategic interest in this part of the region and wanted to strengthen and promote closer economic, military and defense relationship with Pakistan.

Lewis stressed the need for promoting closer defense collaboration and high-level defense exchanges for the mutual benefits of the two sides.

The meeting also discussed the security situation of Afghanistan. The minister said that Pakistan wanted to see durable peace and stability in Afghanistan. He termed the Afghan national process of reconciliation and reintegration as a good start.
