Pak confers Sitara-e-Imtiaz on Nirmala Deshpande

Noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande was tonight posthumously conferred the 'Sitara-e-Imtiaz', Pakistan's second highest civilian award, for promoting peace between the two countries.

Deshpande's sister Kalpana Paranjpe received the award from Pakistan High Commissioner Shahid Malik at a function to celebrate Pakistan's National Day here.

Deshpande, who died on May 1, 2008, was honoured for her contribution in promoting peace and friendship between India
and Pakistan.

Minister of state for HRD D Purandeshwari, envoys of various countries including US' Ambassador Timothy J Roemer, French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont and Chinese Ambassador, Zhang Yan, were among the dignitaries present at the function
held at the Pakistan High Commission.

Kashmiri separatist leaders Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Maulana Abbas Ansari and Yasin Malik also attended the function.

Pak confers Sitara-e-Imtiaz on Deshpande

New Delhi, Mar 23: Veteran Gandhian and Social worker late Nirmala Deshpande, who dedicated her life for promotion of Indo-Pak relations was conferred with Sitara-e- Imtiaz (posthumously) by the Pakistan government in recognition to her contribution for the cause of peace and harmony between two neighbouring nations.
Kalpana Prangpe, sister of late Deshpande, received the prestigious civilian award from Pakistan High Commissioner Shahid Malik at ceremony at the High Commission premises here.
Malik also hosted reception on the Pakistan National Day at the High Commission, which was attended by separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin and others. The High Commissioner remembered the services rendered by the late Gandhian in making the South Asia a zone of peace. She was described as Ambassador of peace.
Deshpande was a champion of human rights and worked with a number of social organisations to develop strong bonds of friendship between India and Pakistan. She visited Pakistan several times to promote peace.
Late Deshpande was also closely associated with the Kashmiri separatist leaders and was a strong advocate of the resolution of the Kashmir issue through peaceful means. She is among few Indians, conferred the Pakistan government’s award. Former prime Minister Late Morarji Desai and veteran film actor Dilip Kumar are other awardees.

I have worked tirelessly as a comon man for peace., but these awards are only for elites. I guess.

India has awarded Bharat Ratna to Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan(Frontier Gandhi), but i don't think he was so popular in Pakistan anyways.

He was not considered patriotic Pakistani used by foriegner to work for them in Pakistan.


to award him the medal India proved that it has anti Pakistan policy, was again proved in Bangladesh.
