Imran Khan is used to delivering bouncers but he was recently on the receiving end as his ex-wife Reham Khan released a tell-all + . From kaali daal (supposed to be an antidote to black magic!) to drugs and deviant behaviour, the memoir dished out many unsavoury details about the legendary cricketer and his politics. Reham, who works as a broadcast journalist in the UK, tells Neelam Raaj why she thinks Pakistan’s new leader won’t do justice to his crown.

Excerpts:

Imran seems set to become Pakistan PM. Are you disappointed that your revelations did not impact his image with voters? Do sexcapades ever hurt a male politician anyway?

I was never under the illusion that my book would stop his win. And anyway, this is not his win. It’s been scripted. He is what is called a director’s actor, and the

director is the military establishment +
. He will also be a wrong role model for the youth to follow. Inside his home, he lives like a liberal and then uses the

blasphemy
law. And you’re right that his playboy image doesn’t hurt him. In our society, the man is always a stud and the woman a whore.

Many have criticised your book saying it had malicious intent. What do you say to comments that it is a revenge memoir?

No, I am not a vengeful person. I waited to write the book because my emotions were too raw. I hope that many people will identify with my story. Like me, women often fall for hapless boys who look vulnerable and are tempted to mother them. And like most wives, I covered up his faults and bad habits such as the drug use. I recently cried while watching the movie Sanju. The bathroom scene reminded me of Imran.

What do you say about Imran’s reaction that his marriage to you was his biggest mistake?

There is very little Imran and I see eye to eye on ideologically but in this, I totally agree with him. I think he went by my ‘weather girl’ glam image and I was a shock to him. I’m a professional, a self-made person, a workaholic, teetotaler, and an anti-drugs campaigner. Certainly not the London socialite he was expecting. For me, one of the most unattractive things about him was his celebrity status, and he expected me to treat him like he was god. In fact, he even called himself Suleiman the Magnificent (Ottoman sultan) and referred to me as his

Roxelana
. But I’m blunt and if you’re looking fat in green, I’m going to say so.

You’ve been pretty open about sexual and personal details like how you saw him rubbing his genitals with daal, his bi-curious nature and his illegitimate kids. Do you regret being so candid?

I haven’t talked about what happened between us. As for the other details, it’s only what I saw or what he told me. He told me about his sexual exploits and his illegitimate kids. And the book isn’t about sex or divorce. Marriages break up every day. The problem was how sexual and financial favours were being traded in the PTI. Cronies were being promoted, that too incompetent ones.

What has been the reaction to the book?

Everyone is upset with me because I’ve been so brutally honest. Even women are unsympathetic. Though I shouldn’t be surprised because often those attending conferences on women’s rights are quiet about getting beaten up at home. I’ve got threats, and even those who interview me or retweet my comments are hounded. But the heartening thing is that girls in Pakistan who’ve been exploited by sexual predators have been calling me to share their story.

Your critics say you have political ambitions. Are you planning to join politics?
For one thing, I am a British national so I can’t legally contest. Second, Pakistan’s politics is too sleazy and filthy for me. And then I don’t have any financial lobby backing me. People say I meddled in politics while I was his wife but I never sat in on meetings or interfered in ticket distribution. Yes, he did sometimes ask for my advice but usually ignored it.

Despite what Imran said after his victory, there are apprehensions in India that he is insincere. Are these fears misplaced?
Well, it was the Indian media which made him into such a hero. Imran will be a friend till it suits him. The PTI was behind the social media trend ‘balla ghumao, Bharat bhagao’. And don’t go by the ‘Im the Dim’ image, he’s not dim. He can be Machiavellian in politics. But for Pakistan’s sake and the subcontinent’s sake, I hope he uses the EU as a model.

How do you think Imran will do as PM?
Look at his body language. He knows he has stolen the mandate. They (the army) wanted a boot polisher, and right now no one polishes boots better than him. But I think the benevolence will be short-lived.
