ISLAMABAD: Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain Tuesday highlighted importance of overseas Pakistanis and declared them the backbone of national economy.

Addressing the representatives of Pakistanis based in Cape Town, South Africa, he said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government had accorded top most priority to the welfare of all Pakistanis living abroad.

According to a press release issued here, the minister said that remittances received from Pakistanis residing in South Africa was playing an important role in strengthening the national economy.

He reiterated that the government had taken various steps for the future of Pakistan.

He said the economy suffered great loss due to energy crisis, the menace of terrorism and situation in Karachi, but "now by the grace of Allah Almighty we have successfully tackled these challenges".

The Operation Zarb-e-Azb, he said, had been helpful in combating terrorism in Federally Administered Tribal Areas, adding that the whole nation was united and it supported the government to completely eliminate terrorists from the Pakistani soil.

Speaking about economic situation, Rana Tanveer said that the Gross Domestic Product growth was 2.2 percent in 2013 and now it was 4.5 percent whereas the government had set the target to take it 7 percent, which would be achieved in next two years.

"Pakistan Stock Exchanges have crossed 40,000 points limit which is high achievement of PML-N government," the minister said and added that the China Pakistan Economic Corridor was a game changer for Pakistan's economy.

The minister praised the peaceful Pakistani community living in South Africa and urged them to increase people-to-people contact and trade between the two countries.

He said the government was fully determined to give right of vote to the overseas Pakistanis.

Pakistanis based in South Africa expressed gratitude to the government of Pakistan for effectively safeguarding the interests of the community.

They appreciated the government for promptly resolving issues faced by the community, especially issuance of Machine Readable Passports to all categories of applicants.

Representatives of Pakistani community congratulated Rana Tanveer Hussain for success of the PML-N in by-elections in Chichawatni, Jhelum and Burewala.

In return their taxes on air tickets keep going up. Nothing is done to bring down air fares, so the average blue collar bloke can visit his loved ones more often.

Disclaimer: I'm quoting Sir @Indus Falcon here.
u r right.govt have been milking us from quite sometime.the only better thing was done by misharraf, when he freed poor people from all expenses of transportation of dead workers.before that it was horrible.poor labor guys dead and people start collecting money for the transportation.thats the only good thing they did in 50 years

He also did two other things which were good. (Two things that I know of) One was the fast implementation of Machine Readable Passports, and the other was to make Remittance by official channels cheaper, where the transfer fee would be borne by the Govt. That has been changed to a min of US$200 now.

Either way it helps the economy, so it makes sense. Secondly, some exchange houses here do home delivery as well, so the money doesn't necessarily goes in to bank accounts, but yes it does go through proper channels, thereby helping the country / economy.

over seas Pakistanis are like cows whom every govt milk happily for instance here is the breakup of taxes at air tickets

Advance passenger informative fee : 144
infrastructure development charges : 1030
Security Charges : 1030
Federal Excise Duty: 5000
Embarkation Fee : 1500

damn ticket amount is lesser than these taxes and beside that one crape thing "Visa Protection" it is one more method to slay the over seas Pakistanis who are working in gulf

FOR NICOP ID here is the breakup

New smart NICOP Fee is : 10,500
and for cancellation fee is : 15,750
and somehow if u lost it free of reprint is : 16,300
this document have no use any where in the world because passport is sufficient for all activities

for visa protection it is compulsory so ... coming out of pakistan is not an easy task :D

What are overseas Pakistani getting in return ? They are treated miserably on Airports. The condition of Pakistani embassies around the globe is deplorable. Despite sending back huge remittance back home, they get nothing back in return. If Government fails to recognize their contributions and will not allow any concessions or lucrative offers then, expect remittances to do go down.
