Only 46.66% students pass Bihar Board Class 10 exams
PATNA: Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB)'s success in stopping use of unfair means at Matriculation exams reflected in the results declared on Sunday in which only 46.66% of the 15.47 lakh examinees passed the exam.
The Board registered a dip of over 28% in the results compared to last year when 75.17% students had aced the exam. "The results are not as expected. But, this result shows the actual merit of our students. Those who have passed will be able to clear national level competitive exams as against those who used to pass because of cheating or other unfair means," state education minister Ashok Choudhary said while releasing the results at the Board office here.
It may be recalled that the Board courted controversy after photographs of mass scale cheating at a Matriculation exam centre in Vaishali went viral on the social media in March 2015. Strict arrangements including installation of CCTV cameras and deployment of cops at exam centres were put in place this year by the state government to check unfair means.
Simultala Awasiya Vidyalaya (SAV), Jamui's Babita Kumari and Trisha Tanvi topped the state with 96.6% marks. The second position was shared by Komal Kumari, Abhinav Sharma and Madhukar Kumari with 96.4% marks while Divya Jyoti and Priyanka Kumari secured the third rank with 96.2% marks. In all, 24 girls and 18 boys, all from SAV-Jamui, made it to the top-10 merit list this year.
With strict measures to check unfair means during exam put in place, more than 8.21 lakh or 53% students were not able to clear the exam this year. The pass percentage of boys at 54.44% was almost 17% more than that of girls at 37.61%. Only 10.86% examinees were able to secure a first division this time as against 21.45% students last year. The result of 1,669 students is pending.
To give the failed students a second chance, the Board will conduct compartmental exams in August. "Till last year, we held compartmental exam in two subjects, but, this year, students will be allowed to appear at three subjects. Also, when their final results will be published in September, they will be given a division and grade, unlike last year when compart students were not given any division," Choudhary said.
As the Intermediate results also saw a dip in the pass percentage this year - 29.74% in arts, 22.26% in science and 10% in commerce, the minister said the failed students will be able to write compartmental exam in three subjects too.
The state government will also identify and monitor schools which have not given good results and work on improving them, the minister said and added, "We conducted the exam and evaluation strictly and have been able to succeed in it. Now, our aim will be to continue the same but give better results next year."
Choudhary said the Board is registering students in Class IX itself starting this year and a pre-Matric evaluation will be done so that students can work on their weaker subjects accordingly. "A pre-Matric evaluation will give the students a practice of writing exams. We will also arrange for extra coaching for the students weak in particular subjects," he said.
Asked about shortage of teachers in secondary and senior secondary government schools, Choudhary said, "The recruitment will start post Panchayat election." BSEB chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh and secretary Harihar Nath Jha were also present on the occasion.
