I asked Bush to abstain: Olmert

Tuesday, January 13, 2009, Daily Times (Pakistan)

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Monday he had telephoned United States President George W Bush late on Thursday to ask the US not to vote in the United Nations Security Council for a ceasefire in Gaza. “In the night between Thursday and Friday, when the US secretary of state wanted to lead the vote on a ceasefire at the UNSC, we did not want her to vote in favour,” Olmert said. “I told him (Bush) the US could not vote in favour.”

Interesting what clout Israel has with the US, isn't it? My Sunday Washington Post reported a breakdown of the religious affiliations of Members of the US Congress in the new session that started January 5, 2009. 8.4% are Jewish, whereas the US population is only 1.7% Jewish. That is, Jewish Americans are represented at 5 times their population strength in our Congress. They are the only US religious group that is represented at a huge ratio to their population percentage share. In the US Senate (100 members total) there are 13 Jewish Senators, i.e. 13%, a ratio of 8 times the US Jewish population. There are two Muslims out of 435 Members of the House of Representatives and no Senators, i.e. ~ 0.4% Muslim Members of Congress. I think the US Muslim population percentage is ~ 1%. No Hindus or Sikhs in the US Congress.
