About a month ago I posted a thread regarding some mechanical engineers (pak wheelers) making a hybrid car and participating in Shell Eco Marathon.

Now here it is

NUST shines in SEM 2010 Asia | I R NUSTIAN :yahoo:

The Shell Eco Marathon Asia 2010 took place on 10th July, 2010, at the Sepang International F1 Circuit, Malaysia. Students from all over Asia hauled their cars over to Malaysia to participate in the biggest marathon for fuel efficiency, being organized for the first time in Asia. Before this, it had been taking place as Shell Eco Marathon Americas and Shell Eco Marathon Europe, since 25 years.

20 teams from Pakistan participated in the race for fuel efficiency and environmental protection. The institutes included geniuses from GIKI Swabi, Air University Islamabad, NED-UET Karachi, UET Taxila and the prestigious UET Lahore. NUST was the institute with the most teams participating from Pakistan, with two teams (one urban and one prototype category) from PNEC Karachi and four teams (two urban and two prototype) from CEME Rawalpindi.

The students strived really hard. Being part of one of the teams, I can tell you firsthand the difficulties we had to face, and the alternatives we had to find for the technologies not available in Pakistan and yet ladies and gentleman, Pakistan did represent itself very well.

Prodigy by Team PakWheelers (CEME)

The cars were handed over to the students on 7th July,2010. The days and nights grew shorter and work grew longer, as the post-shipment repairs began. With the deadline being 12pm (Malaysian Time) 9th July, 2010, students could be seen clearing water from their supercapacitors, re-welding the broken welds, starting and tuning the engine, fixing broken brake wires, installing seat belts and all kinds of dirty jobs; it was a sight to behold. Technical and safety inspections took place as soon as you asked for them, and once they were cleared, the vehicle was declared safe to drive on the track.

6 cars from Pakistan cleared the technical inspections to make it to the track, out of the total 51 from the world; which is a great accomplishment. These teams included PakWheelers from CEME (urban category; hybrid gasoline-electric vehicle Prodigy) and Zaafir from CEME (prototype category; three-wheeler gasoline vehicle AMAL ).

Out of these 6, two teams completed the whole track, i.e. 5 laps. Zaafir achieved a mileage of 65mpg (miles per gallon) and team AQUA from GIKI achieved 55mpg. Both were prototype vehicles, GIKI’s seniors having competed previously in the Shell Eco Marathon Europe 2009.

Team PakWheelers also received the “RECYLCE Award”, the only team from Pakistan to actually receive an award

Ladies and Gentlemen, a big round of applause for Zaafir and PakWheelers is called for; and for the all the other NUSTian teams that made it to Malaysia. Afterall, making a complete vehicle in one year is no small thing
