The Mars Orbiter Mission may have sparked a debate on 'space race' between India and China, but former ISRO boss G Madhavan Nair says Beijing has already surged forward and is on course to have an upper hand in the field globally.
"I think if somebody says that we can race with China and catch up with them.....at the moment....we have lost the game very badly," he said in Bangalore.

According to him, India and China were "almost equal" five years ago and, except in the area of manned mission, "we had everything in pace". "In fact, in some of the technologies we were ahead of China, especially in space communications and remote sensing," he said.

"In the last five years, while India was sleeping, the Chinese steadily surged forward. They have 10 astronauts who had gone to space and come back. They have space station...half the job is over and I think in 2015, it will be operational," noted Nair, who had accomplished 25 successful missions during his six years tenure as ISRO Chairman and Secretary in the Department of Space.

"And they (China) are making a heavy-lift launcher which can take about 25 tonnes into lower orbit. With this they are going to have an upper hand in space not only in Asia Pacific region but globally as well," he said.

India is currently implementing programmes approved in 2007 and 2008 and they are progressing at "snail's pace", Nair, who was recently re-elected President of International Academy of Astronautics, said.

"We don't have a clear vision for the next ten years; what we should be doing in this area," he said. "And even in precious areas like tele-medicine, tele-education and village resource centres, where we had made an impact, they all have been wound up," he said.

"In communication transponders, there is a severe shortage and we are doing nothing about it. Navigation satellite... first one is launched. But subsequent ones are yet to go. So in that backdrop, sending a minuscule spacecraft to Mars at this time....it's totally, I would say, misplaced priority," Nair said.

Former ISRO boss G Madhavan Nair is a critic of new ISRO chief as he was kicked out of ISRO for corruption. He was dead against Mars Mission. Now, he has gone mad after it's success.

We have reached Moon, we are towards Mars. But, we are not in a competition.

Why equal to China... when Madhavan was chairman, ISRO's capabilities gave shivers to the US and USSR (Russia's soul in the past is still scared of Madhavan lol). I guess next he will come out and say ISRO sent a mission to Alpha Centauri under his term... but it is a secret lol

For some people, jealousy knows no bounds... it is a matter of shame that such a condescending man was the chairman of ISRO. No wonder ISRO lagged behind badly in the period of 2003-2009. I wonder what he did with all the money he burped from the projects.

China is ahead no doubt because India has yet to send a manned flight to space and also we do not have any space station plans in offing till now

LOL..Sarcasm...

by the way, both Global times and Madhavan Nair criticized Mars mission..We know the reason of Global Times' a$$burn..but why Nair???LOL..

Its good we indians are our own biggest critics. it keeps us focused in not accepting what we already have but to strive better.
He is right china is ahead in the space race , but so what ? we will get there:)

There is no need to compare with China. India is in a race with its own plans and schedule. While China has its own plans and schedule. As long as India is successful in its own plans and schedule, than it has a successful program regardless of what others are doing.

Nair is the guy who knows the business in india, not some chest thumping cheerleaders and he is genuine.

While China has made a lot of advancements we are not the most advanced nation in aerospace. Still a long way to go!

Rather than getting into any competition, it's good to see Indian research institutions are putting their focus on scientific development of the society.

Now let's put more emphasis on manned space mission, shall we?

Look what happened to the US....with the end of the space race we bogged down.Space travel is expensive and generates no monetary profit....the only thing you can count on is strategic advantage over your enemy...and that's why you need competition to keep you going!

Almost equal 5 years ago?

These Indians are not just delusional, they are just straight up stupid.

Indian is far from exploring Mars, wasted resource to send a camera to take the picture of Mars from the distance.
