KARACHI: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Information Technology Sardar Muhmmad Latif Khosa has categorically denied the news regarding the proposed ban on import of used computers and said that the ministry was thinking to abolish the sales tax too.
He said this while addressing the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industrys members on Monday. He said that the hype regarding the proposed ban on import of used computers was created by the media, however there was no truth in this news.
Khosa said that the ministry did not make any summary regarding the ban on the import of used computers as the sector was doing wonderfully well, but the ministry was trying to give the manufacturers more relief in shape of abolishment on sales tax. He also sought suggestions from the private sector to develop and promote the sector. He said that the government was trying to promote and develop the IT sector in the country and many steps had been taken so far in this regard.
It is pertinent to mention that there were news regarding the ban on import of used computers in the press since last month that the Ministry of Information Technology was considering a ban on the import of used computers and accessories.
Meanwhile, the computer importers, dealers and the representative body of IT education institutes had rejected the proposed ban on import of used computers and accessories, asserting that it would deprive IT institutes and students from acquiring cheap equipment.
It must be kept in mind that a common man cannot afford to buy a new computer for Rs 40,000. There are some 1,400,000 computers in Pakistan, of which 60 percent are used or old computers, 24 percent internationally assembled new computers while 16 percent are locally assembled new computers.
