NAB chief denies reports of resignation Says he won’t let SC down
KARACHI: Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari on Tuesday said he may face hurdles in the execution of the Supreme Court orders for the arrest of 16 accused, including Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, in the infamous RPPs’ case, but he would not let the superior judiciary down and come up to its expectations.
He also denied reports about his resignation.“There are always difficulties being encountered during the investigation of cases, but I would not disappoint the higher institutions,” Bokhari said while talking to media persons soon after his arrival at the Jinnah Terminal from Islamabad.
When asked if the bureau would face difficulties in arresting the prime minister and other accused, the NAB chief said: said: “We will overcome the difficulties and proceed as per the law and the Constitution.”
Bokhari was reportedly summoned by President Asif Ali Zardari in Karachi soon after the SC orders which triggered political uncertainty and widespread protests especially in the Sindh province. However, talking to Geo TV, Bokhari said he had come to Karachi “to attend some urgent work.”
Earlier, there were reports that the NAB chairman had tendered his resignation. A Britain-based media group also reported that the NAB chief had stepped down.Bokhari denied the reports, saying that he did not intend to step down and would return to Islamabad to perform his duties.
In a related development and in contrast to the widely held perception, Law Minister Farooq H. Naek claimed that the SC written orders did not mention the arrest of prime minister in the rental power case. He opined that it was up to the NAB chief to investigate the case and arrest the accused.
Bokhari told media persons that he had just arrived in Karachi and would go through the written orders of the SC and implement them “as per the constitution and the law.”Asked if the names of 16 accused had been put on the Exit Control List (ECL) as per directions of the superior judiciary, Fasih said he would seek details and confirmation from the Interior Ministry to this effect. “The NAB would act as per the law,” he added.
