For its 300th birthday, The Big Easy is getting a big sister. New Orleans is at last slated to be twinned with its French namesake, Orléans.

Outgoing New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and his Orléans counterpart Olivier Carré announced the decision to twin the cities on Tuesday in Orléans during the Louisiana politician’s visit with an American delegation.

The cities will make their alliance official in January 2018, three centuries after Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the Montreal-born son of a French pioneer, founded the Louisiana outpost in 1718. In the event, Le Moyne named the town not for the city of Orléans, an ancient city on the Loire River south of Paris, but for Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. The duke served as Regent of France until Louis XV, who was only five when his father Louis XIV died in 1715, could take power himself eight years later.

La République du Centre, a French regional daily, reports that the date being mooted for the signing is January 6, a day dear to the people of Orléans as it marks the 606th anniversary of the birth of Joan of Arc, the teenaged saint credited with delivering Orléans in 1429 from the English who had besieged the city.

In remarks during the announcement Tuesday, Landrieu called Orléans "a big sister” more than 1,700 years his city's senior, the French daily reported.

The new partnership is slated to revolve around the themes of entrepreneurship, water management and culture.

“This is a childhood dream,” Orléans' Carré said of the plan to twin two cities that, despite their lookalike names, had yet to enjoy any formal links.

Has New York been twinned with York yet? Or maybe Amsterdam given its original name? :P

Love the Cajun cuisine down in that part of the US! Few speak the French I know, but they have lot of French words in their vocab and place names. We call these folk Acadian, some are down there (given Brits expelled them after they fought on French side), some stayed up here still though (and largely integrated with Canadian French).

It is about time, @Vergennes !

Jambalaya, baby! Anything with Cajun flare especially crawfish etouffee, nothing like it. Been there several times, love it. Once during Mardis Gras lol, and once for the superbowl. What decadence but that was in my very youthful days. Heading down in a couple of months we're fishing off the Keys and then we're heading west of the Louisiana coast for some yellowfin tuna, some of the best tuna fishing is south of Louisiana. Now I might be tempted to dock at Venice Marina for some of that blackened swordfish thanks to you and Vergennes! :-)

Indeed! The seafood is out of this world, and fishing for it makes it even better tasting!
Louisiana fishing is some of the best in the entire US, right after Florida.
@Vergennes , now that New Orleans has been twinned, you'll need to come down and visit, my friend.

Look at this fabulous, Yellowfin Tuna fishing off the Louisiana coast. :-)

You guys know I'm focused on the fish, right?

Some of it is tough to get use to. I stick mostly with the common sushi items like the Sushi or California roll. Very simple to make even, but most grocery delis will make them fresh and they are delicious. Plus the crabmeat is pre-cooked also, so it's not actually raw.

The rice is very sticky, covered with sesame seeds, with a roll of delicious seaweed and tucked in the middle is the crabmeat, small slices of cucumber and little chunks of avocado. Dip them in a tiny bit of soy sauce and go to heaven! :-)

California roll with the sticky rice on the outside garnished with sesame seeds.

If you bring some of those home and get your family to try them, they'll be hooked, guaranteed, and if the "raw fish" issue is what bothers them, you can assure them the crabmeat is cooked. It's the same crabmeat found in authentic crab salad.

And if you ever do try Cajun or creole, this is the ultimate dish, the gold standard IMO. @Nilgiri might have a different opinion but this one is mine. If you like shrimp, the crawfish is its marshy cousin and in NO they make the crawfish etoufee. A spicy mushroom sauce mixed with small chunks of celery, spring onions, celery, bell peppers and sometimes they'll add yellow onions and a bunch of crawfish tails with a heap of white rice. Absolutely delicious!

yeah i was thinking of doing the same.to give them a surprise treat and get them hooked.it should do the trick if not then dragging them to the restaurant without telling them is always the option

Raw fish? Cajun for me is breaded and fried mostly (for seafood)....served with some good hearty accompaniments. It is soul food hehe. They do lot of stewing, bbq, grilling etc as well depends on what we are cooking. Very few things raw hehe. They do use shellfish a lot, and that can be issue for some halal following folk I have heard depending on interpretation etc.

The stuff gomig has expanded too for seafood in general (sushi etc) is more like what you describe for sure.

You are not a full fledged tharki...good on you bud. :)

Etoufee is definitely an excellent choice, but the cook needs to know what he/she is doing (seafood based jambalayas, gumbos are generally more forgiving). When done right however, it is sublime.

Yah just going with flow of conversation using my faulty reading of what you wrote lol.

I bet some places in Lahore etc would have standard "cajun theme" food for like say chicken etc. (given I know worldwide there is prevalence of such for standard global palate). Might not be fully authentic stuff (just like authentic desi soul food hard to find outside of subcontinent), but maybe for introduction to what the cajun spice rub etc its ok.
