Need help- How to start with open source C++ projects?

Hi everyone,I wanted to start working on c++ open source projects.I want to know how working on open source works and what are the current trends in open source working.I just passed out from the college last year and have been working for 9 months now.
How should I start working on these?
Will it help me in applying for MS ? ( I have a low 7.5 CGPA but I'm from a good college(NIT) )
How much time will I have to devote on open source? (I am also working in a software company(Samsung research)
I need help from anyone in IT industry with good knowledge about the subject .

As far as I know, GPA is usually max 4.0. Is it different in India?

About C++, I can't help because I studied basic C and then moved to Java. But what do you want with open source projects? Please elaborate more on what exactly you're looking for and what help you need?

4 years IT sec industry experience
planning for MS in USA and pursuing a research project to compensate for low GPA

Well if you just want to strengthen your profile for MS then just go for some projects. Explore GitHub.com which is largest repository of open source projects and code samples for ideas. Explore C++ related projects on google to get which type of projects are more famous these days and try to make a replica or try creating something new with fresh ideas if you have any. Even if its a replica of something good, it will have weight on your prospect.

In PHP, I created a complex ecommerce site to demonstrate my skills. That worked brilliantly..

They saw my resume and thought I could be help on 2 Security projects they are working on.

Btw, If you are interested, I am pursuing a research project which could use C++ expertise.

Yes, but more better option in my opinion will be, create an addon or extention for firefox. If that becomes a hit, you can earn from it in future.
