QUETTA: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif has empowered a Baloch jirga, headed by Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani and the chief of Jhalawan Sardar Sanaullah Zehri, for removing differences between his party and the Pakistan People’s Party.

“The PML-N will accept whatever verdict the jirga gives according to Baloch traditions and on the basis of justice,” he told Mr Raisani here on Monday. Mr Sharif is on a two-day visit to Quetta, his first in 10 years.

Chief Minister Raisani, PPP’s parliamentary leader in the provincial assembly Mir Sadiq Umrani, and others received him at the airport.

The former premier said he and his party had always worked for better relations with the PPP. “We will accept the verdict of the Baloch jirga if we are found at fault.”

He said both parties had started a political journey with mutual understanding after the Murree accord to solve problems faced by the people.

The former premier said the PML-N had supported the PPP for strengthening democracy, and not for the sake of office.

He said his party believed that undemocratic decisions and steps taken by the Musharraf government should not be endorsed and the 17th Amendment should be repealed without any delay as decided under the Charter of Democracy.

He said all decisions taken by a non-political set-up should be declared illegal. Mr Sharif said the PML-N was in favour of provincial autonomy and the issue should be resolved through understanding and dialogue.

Talking to newsmen after a meeting of the provincial organising committee of the PML-N, Mr Sharif said seeking pardon was meaningless without solving the basic problems of the Baloch people. “Brutal murder of veteran Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti was an unjustified act of Gen Musharraf and without punishing him for this heinous crime the anger among the Baloch people will not go,” he said.

Nawab Bugti was a true Pakistani who had voted for the country and never opposed it, the PML-N chief observed. He said Nawab Bugti and Sardar Attaullah Khan Mengal were seasoned politicians and patriots. He said both leaders and other tribal elders had extended full support when the 8th Amendment was moved in parliament during his government.

However, he said, things had changed considerably over the past 10 years and the policies and undemocratic decisions of a dictator had created a gulf between the Baloch and the centre.

BUGTI HOUSE: Mr Sharif visited Bugti House to offer condolences over the death of Nawab Bugti to his son Nawabzada Talal Akbar Bugti.

He said a judicial commission comprising “the best judges” should be set up for investigating the murder. The PML-N leader also called on Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party’s chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai.

Someone need to tell this guy that his party will not win the next elections unless PML-N has done some terrific work in Punjab.
