ISLAMABAD - The would-be prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has given a nod to his party's energy plan, tasking senior party leader Khawaja Asif for its implementation since he would be the next minister for water and power.
Electricity load shedding saw an instant increase during the past three days as the shortfall touched 5,300 megawatts (MW). With the temperature rising, the shortfall also picked up and as a result chronic load shedding is being observed in urban and rural areas of the country. The overall power demand is around 15,000 MW while the available supply is only 9,700 MW.
However, experts say Pakistan has the infrastructure and the capacity to produce 21,000 MW of electricity but owing to different reasons, the full capacity production remained a dream.
A well-placed source in the PML-N told Pakistan Today that Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting attended by his party's senior leaders and some businessmen who would be part of a team which is going to help the government devise and implement the energy plan.
The source said the team briefed Nawaz on the proposed initiatives for short, medium and long-term targets for enhancement of power production which would rid the country of the power crisis.
"The team includes a business tycoon and some other big names while a banker-cum-economist who has also served as minister for finance would lead the team. Senator Ishaq Dar would also be a member of the team. The team briefed Nawaz on the energy plan at length and the PML-N chief looked confident about the plan's outcome," the source said.
The source added that Senator Ishaq Dar and Khawaja Asif were also preset during the meeting. He said Sharif asked Dar and Asif to make sure the plan is implemented in letter and spirit and no bureaucratic hurdle undermined it. The PML-N chief assured the meeting that his government would be fully backing this plan to get the country out of the crisis, the source added.
The source further said Nawaz told the meeting that ending load shedding would be the top priority of his government and he hoped that the energy plan would help his government to redress the issue which had hit the country's economy hard; with millions left unemployed while industry had been shifted to other countries.
"Nawaz Sharif also lauded the support and keenness of the business community for redressing the power crisis. He said if his government continued enjoying support from patriotic businessmen, issues faced by the people at large would be tackled and the country would be on the path of progress," the source quoted the PML-N chief as saying. - See more at: Nawaz approves PML-N's energy plan | Pakistan Today | Latest news | Breaking news | Pakistan News | World news | Business | Sport and Multimedia

So Khawaja Asif is the next water and power minister ? I thought it would be Ahsan Iqbal...

If anyone, it'll be Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who can tackle the energy crises. I am optimistic and very hopeful.

It's already Saturday May 18, 2013 and not long to go before the end of the year. if I am correct, we should start seeing the results in a few months. It won't be much at first but it'll set the trend of good things to come in regards to the energy situation for the next couple of years Insha'Allah.

Best of luck, would be PM, i wish this sweadlock to produce something good for down trodden nation.

Is it true that Nawaz Sharif or PML N is against Iran Pak Gas Pipeline ? If true, then how PML N will solve the energy crisis, without Iran Pak gas pipeline ???

so we have demand of 15000 and production capicity of 21000...
what am i missing..we can produce cheap power of about 7000mw from water and relativly cheaper of 3000 from local gas
SO why such a large circlular debt
PML n SIMPLY HAS to increase recovery, converted old captives plant immediately to coal by shutting them down and diverting gas and fuel to more efficient IPPs this alone can tackle major load shedding within few months

Excellent news only one problem we dont have enough gas and converting oil fired power plants to gas fired takes lot longer then few months plus not to mention the cost.

In Nawaz shrief we trust :k:

I thinks if its any party that fix this energy deficit in the country, it's Pmln. And in year's time, we'll all see.

i didn't see anything happening in last 5 years, all i got was traffic jam, f****ked up roads, flyovers, an ID promising me 3 month internship;which btw i never got

I was hoping for bullet points of how "Sharif" saab would take on Load Shedding. But the only "news" was he chaired a meeting on the Energy Crisis.

The "Sharif" Saabs have been saying that since Zardari became President. We will end Load shedding in Punjab in months, what happened?

It takes months to make a solar/ wind/ coal plant and that is IF the entire plant has been manufactured and already in the country. It takes years to make a dam.

So the only solution is Rental Power. And all Rental Power comes from burning Oil. So Oil powered electricity power plants? Come on yaar.

Pakistan needs leaders who are educated in Pakistan, because only then do they know what the true aliments are afflicting their country. Not these people who lived their entire lives overseas and "educated" in Oxford/ Cambridge or LSE.
