There is a notion in international relations, which arrests our attention pertinent to the importance of geography and natural resources “Tug of War for Resources”. With Robert Kaplan, raising our awareness about Coming Anarchy, has stimulated our concerns that how international relations are changing their nature because of scarcity of resources. A tug of war to gain control on resource rich areas has now become pivot for the industrial countries.
Through soft ad hard power nations of all stripes are trying to achieve their ends to fill their thirst for energy consumption and energy preservation. Though it’s not a new idea, historical wars had also been fought for the capturing of territories, which were rich in resources. A new world has, however understood that, instead of maintaining control on captured areas warrant large amount of budgets, which however could be dealt by toppling anti-governments political parties and installing governments of its purposes in far less budget and also with least concern for the rights of the citizens of the targeted states.
The idea of proxy wars and civil unrest has replaced the old ways of traditional state to state wars. New instruments are incorporated to defabricate the social environment. According to World Bank Report there has been witnessed a sharp increase in the civil strifes and insurgencies in states after World War two. Now antagonist states forward their narrative which is less costly, yet more effective to deal with their rival states. That is, to jeopardize their sovereignty through anti-government movements and civil wars. The propaganda game starts for raising voices against injustices happening against common men by the government. Slogans of human rights, freedom, women empowerment, child labor and egalitarian society have baffled the societies.
The pretty picture of international NGOs led agenda has far reaching effects on the societies, which is difficult to discern. Where awareness of human and just rights are producing positive effects by improving health and education situation within the states, on the other hand, these tools are used to dismantle or deteriorate the security situation in these states. To disparate the social functioning of the targeted states, rival states are funding insurgent groups through hard and soft means. By hard means, the provision of small arms weapons to the insurgent groups, and soft by giving affecttees aid through NGOs.
A Polio campaign run by International NGOs to capture and kill Bin Laden is not an old story. While remaining in host countries, these organizations are carrying out covert operations for their states. However,it would be wrong to assume that all sorts of NGOs are performing the same task of defabricating the societies but in most instances these NGOs are more or less carrying out covert operations for their states.
Likewise, religion is also used to spread terrorism in the states. Madrissas and religious scholars of purposes are getting funding from proclaiming religious states and sympathizers to blow an environment of civil unrest. This is the reason, Baluchistan became destabilized due to its geo-political location and also because it is rich in gold, copper and mineral resources.
Ironically, Islam is more than 1400 years old, but “Islamic Terrorism” began just 30 years ago. Reasons need justifications. How this religious extremism found its roots towards violence. The answer does not lie in religious books to spread violence but rather on earthly facts, and that is the scarcity of resources. Industrial states US, China and Europe are using different means to gain control over the natural resources of these states. Most Muslim states are rich in oil and gas reserves. The states in the Middle East, Africa Sub Saharan States , Central Asia and in South Asia have a long legacy of foreign invasions. And we witness instability and chaos in these states, Why? Religion or Resources?
States and areas with rich resources are at peril, losing their stability. More or less is the case in South African countries, where civil unrest has toppled their governments multiple times. So is the situation taking place in Baluchistan. Where bids are high to gain control over its rich resources. Pakistan is not facing terrorism because of religion, but rather it’s the result of discovery of copper and gold reserves in Ricko Dick. Issue reached to its zenith, when this issue came under debate for its exploitation and processing. Different states and interest groups in Pakistan got activated and accelerated every thick and thin means to get control of its resources.
Other than that, its geographical location for sharing borders with antagonist states like India and Afghanistan is exacerbating the security situation in Baluchistan. The purpose of initiating these insurgencies is to bring Baluchistan close to India. India’s covert operations are not hidden anymore. The declaration of Indian spies of sabotaging Baluchistan’s province through suicide bombing and facilitating small arms maneuvering across the borders is now an open secret. This indicates the deepening of International players’ interests in spoiling the situation. Pakistan must develop a strong plan of action to cater these threats. A developed Baluchistan could be put on its road to progress through infrastructure development and that is by giving Baluchistan an equal share in CPEC projects. Currently, a new wave of terrorism emerged from Baluchistan, as it is located at a very important geopolitical position; Gawadar Port. Many channels, roads and networks are springing out of it. And this is the reason India is trying to destabilize this region to curtail its development. Once Gawadar Port becomes fully operational, it would be far easier for Pakistan to extract its resources without involving or inviting any foreign party to share its fruits.
So, we may say with the depletion of resources, agenda of antagonists states has also changed. They are encroaching for resources, to save their future while putting on stake the future of targeted states. They are trying all means to approach their objectives, whether to provide them with soft incentives in the shape of temporary financial help or with the “ARMS” to create instability in the state.
