NASA is redoubling its efforts to reach Psyche 16. It sounds like something straight from the plot of Austin Powers, but NASA really is following an asteroid worth ten thousand QUADRILLION dollars.

NASA is redoubling its efforts to reach the hurtling chunk of rock presumably in order to beat Dr Evil to it. Instead of a 2023 liftoff, they are now targeting 2022.
It’s made of Fe and Ni – that’s Iron and Nickel for the uninitiated and there is enough of it to send the world economy into a tailspin. It’s called Psyche 16.

The accelerated schedule is thanks to a better launch trajectory. This means it needs more power so the NASA chop shop has souped up its solar panels to allow it to fang through the void to its destination somewhere between Mars and Jupiter.

Even so, it will take around three and half years to get there and then spend a year and a bit orbiting and mapping the asteroid. It has a fully iron core (there’s probably a Chuck Norris gag in that somewhere) which will be the first of its kind explored by humans. Unlike earth, which is basically made up of rocks and water in various forms, Psyche 16 is composed completely of pure sweet sweet metal.

Sci-fi buffs will be salivating at the prospect of outer space mining and untold riches but it seems as though that’s a way off. Even though the rocket men are trying to get to the meteor, there is next to nil chance of bringing it back. The spacecraft will be equipped with all sorts of gadgetry. Instruments include an x-band Gravity Science investigator, a multispectral imager, and a magnetometer.

The goal is to try and ascertain how the thing was formed and compare it to the stuff we get back here on earth. It may provide clues to the origin of the universe and therefore…the meaning of life

The article says that they can not mine it, but rather study it..and at best mimic its composition in laboratory..

They don't want to mine it either because it will turn the global economy upside down but will happen in sometime in the near future. Dream big!

It might ..but for now they are just struggling to get near it to study it.. If they can mine it one day, it will be a great and revolutionary achievement..

I hope it falls on America.
This asteroid is 200km. The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was estimated to be 6 miles across. You do realise that it's going to destroy the whole Earth if it hits the Earth?

Probably won't happen anytime soon, we still need to study about Asteroid first.
True and as long as there's money involved there's motivation.

You do know if that thing fall on America, EVERYONE WOULD BE KILLED. Not just American, because that thing is the 6th biggest Asteroid in the world. Just give you a for instant.

Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, happened in Earth 65 millions years ago, impacted in Yucatan, Mexico, killed 2/3 of all living things on earth, plants and animal. And that was done with a 10-15 KM space rocks and emitted 100 Tton (T for Tera, which is 1000 Millions, which is about 1000 times the world Nuclear Power put together.)

Psyche 16 is 253.2 +/- 4 km wide and unlike space rock, it made of Solid Metal. That thing impacting ANYPOINT IN THIS EARTH would trigger a massive extinction event 10,000 times worse than the one that killed Dinosaurs.....I think most of us would be killed no matter where you are, and if you are lucky enough to survive, you would probably wanted to be dead....

Whoever survives would die slowly without sunlight, poisonous air and extreme cold.

Well, they need to know how this things is formed, and then they need to look at how different it was to the other stuff on earth. And then, maybe, we can talk about mining this damn thing.

Mind you, it took 3 years for a space probe just to get there, and it would take a long arse time if they want to send anything big enough to haul some of these space metal back to earth.

And lol, I like how you reply to that member wishing the asteroid to hit the US.....

I think at that point, if you indeed survived that imact, you would be thinking would I be starve to death or die by hypothermia is the best way to go....

That thing hits would mean the end of mankind, it does not matter which country you are from.....But hey, look at the bright side, if somehow you did survive, then you are looking at a breed of superhuman coming out of this extinction event, because the last one have affected the evolution of the earth so much.

I am not sure. Mammals survived and became the dominant species because of lifestyles. Living in burrows and aquatic environment that shielded them from the impact. As far as I know, we survived thanks to mice-like creature that used to live in burrows to escape dinosaur predators. I guess it was a matter of luck but the if it happens next then we would probably go into a technological dark age for a long time and I doubt the outcome would be better than what we can achieve with our current conditions and technologies that we will develop in the next few decades.

lol he probably thought that it would come in a flying carpet and leave a massive hole in Manhattan. Anyone who has seen how much damage some tiny asteroid did in Siberia a while back wouldn't say shit like this. I can bet my *** that anyone who survives it would spend rest of his life wishing that he died. Imagine living in eternal darkness and cold.

You must be fun at parties.
