Names of three injured commandos who died on Monday

  • Six military men, including a brigadier, a lieutenant colonel and four soldiers embraced martyrdom, and five militants were killed in gun battle on Saturday.Two commandos and three hostages lost their lives and five troops were wounded critically during the rescue operation on Sunday morning, while four terrorists were killed and one was captured alive.
  • Three amongst five injured troops, including L/Naik Qudratullah, Sepoy Rab Nawaz and Havaldar Zar Khan succumbed to their injuries at the hospital on Monday morning.

  • He said they had other demands too, but the release of over 100 apprehended terrorists was their main demand. He replied in affirmative when asked whether the trial of General (retd) Pervez Musharraf and end of the US airbases in Pakistan were also among their demands.

  • About the planning of the attack, Athar Abbas said the conversation between Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander Waliur Rehman and a person revealed that the attack was planned in South Waziristan. Waliur Rehman was asking somebody to pray for ‘Fadayeen’ attack on the GHQ, he said, adding the conversation was intercepted the same morning when the GHQ was attacked.
  • Responding to another question, he said the arrested terrorist, Aqeel alias Dr Usman, was seriously injured and not in a position to give any statement.
  • About the apprehended attacker, he said Aqeel alias Dr Usman belonged to Kahutta near Rawalpindi, who joined the Army corps in 1998 and left in 2004 and was declared absconder.
  • The attackers could not achieve even 10 per cent of their objectives. “Our reaction was satisfactory, half of the terrorists were eliminated outside the GHQ and the big damage was averted which they wanted to cause,” he maintained.

  • Responding to a question, the Army spokesman said the splinter groups of banned outfits had taken refugee in South Waziristan. They were taking part in terrorist acts from there, he said and added similar small groups were also present in southern Punjab.
  • General Abbas said joint investigation by civilian and Army agencies would also look into the involvement of foreign hands, including India, in the incident.

  • Answering a question, he said Brigadier Anwarul Haque was present at the security office when the attack took place. Two officers came out of the office to assess the situation. Brigadier Anwarul Haque asked a terrorist, who was clad in Army uniform, that what he was doing. The attacker turned and fired at the officers, he said.
