ISLAMABAD - Gearing up his efforts to participate in the 2013 general elections with maximum number of candidates, former president Gen. (Retd) Pervez Musharraf has contacted a number of people in Punjab to convince them to contest election under the banner of his party All Pakistan Muslim League (APML).
Contrary to the fact that major political parties in the country are accepting huge amounts from candidates for the partys funds in reward of issuing tickets, the APML has offered some candidates a large amount of money to run the election campaign only with the condition of contesting polls on the APMLs ticket, sources aware of the development Friday disclosed.
The sources informed TheNation that former president Pervez Musharraf had personally contacted people in Punjab to get them agreed to contest the national and provincial assemblies elections on APMLs ticket.
President Musharraf rang me up and try to persuade me to contest election on his partys ticket, an independent candidate of the provincial assembly from central Punjab informed on condition of anonymity. He further said that he had been offered a sizable amount of money from the aides of Musharraf to run the election campaign. He said Musharraf had also personally contacted some other candidates in Punjab.
He said the former dictator told him that he (Musharraf) had the aim to steer Pakistan out of the existing crisis and the APML would prove a revolutionary party.
The APML has already invited applications for party tickets for the national and provincial assemblies seats soon after the arrival of Pervez Mushrraf in Karachi. The party has also announced its federal and provincial parliamentary boards. An office-bearer of the APML endorsed that they were making all-out efforts to convince more candidates to contest the elections on the APMLs ticket.
At the same time, he claimed that a large number of people had voluntarily shown their consent to get the APMLs ticket. We will have a number of candidates to contest the election soon after the finalisation of tickets, he said.
Information Secretary of APML Asia Ishaq could not be contacted despite repeated attempts as her cell phone was switched off.
When Dr Amjad, Chief Organiser APML, was contacted, he told TheNation that former president Musharraf had postponed his Saturdays visit of Islamabad for a day and it was likely that he would reach there by Sunday.
