Before I start let me say that I am a big fan of international cinema and will always try to watch foreign movies as it gives you an insight into the flavor of the local audience but also the development of the film industry in the country concerned.

So it was my day off and I decided to watch the Chinese Movie "Operation Red Sea".

Because I decided to watch the movie early on I was pleasantly surprised to only pay 5 pounds and 45 pence. nice!

The film pays homage to the evacuation of Chinese nationals from the Yemen conflict of 2015 and is set in the fictional restive nation of Yewaire. It starts out interestingly as elite Jiaolong assault tare carrying out a VBBS operation on a Chinese cargo ship boarded by Somali Pirates.

With a lot of Matrix and John Woo style cinematography the tactical team beat the snot out of the Somali pirates and disable the cargo ship before it can enter Somali waters rescuing everyone on board with the sad injury of one of the snipers on the Chinese side.

The film them breaks off onto a scene of the Ship Captain debriefing the SOF Captain about what happened, and telling the patriarchal protagonist to "Take it easy, you are their captain, not their father, the stress will kill you".

Now up until this point I was thinking, hmm not bad seems like an action flick I can get my teeth into. Characters are a bit thin and the acting is cardboard but hey what the heck... But then to my surprise the movie quickly and without much introduction leads to a smoke filled press room in down town Morocco where the French-Chinese journalist and her stalwart assistant "ABU" yes you can't make this up are hot on the trail of one of the baddies who is involved in the research and manufacture of "Yellow Cake".

After a call to action between Abu and Xia nan our brave journalist heroine. The scene flips to a smoke filled room where Xia Nan is having a heated exchange between the newspaper chief editor played by the ever so talented and graceful Simon Yam co-star of movies such as "Contract Killer"

The chief editor warns her not to pursue the article and tells her that he can't risk the lives of his staff, Xia then throws a strop and the next scene is her packing what can only be described as the biggest ruck sack I have ever seen and walking towards her car. She turns around momentarily as if she has forgotten something, notices her blue bracket on the floor and her car explodes (yes you can't make this stuff up).

We then see Chaotic scenes Yewaire where rebels have taken over in a coup and this is where the cartoonish level of villainy is just hilarious and cliche – A civil war involving Islamic State-like extremists, a key to making new “dirty bombs”, and a terrorist leader who, we’re told by the way, sexually assaults young girls – all but grants our heroes full licence to improvise.

Overall it is a very heavy but enjoyable dose of Chinese Jingoism and bombastic gory glory! My favorite part is where a Chinese female solider uses a Single rear blood choke on one of the ginormous baddies near the end.

Some interesting display of Chinese military assets and equipment, overall I enjoyed it and never felt bored. It could have done with more plot and character development, I would have liked to know what happens to the Chinese Ambassador and the families aboard the Ship and what if anything happens to the "Yellow Cake" also who was the actual ring leader in all of the "yellow cake" saga.

Interestingly the baddies were so one dimensional you just had to sit down and laugh:

Baddie 1: A child molesting Scientist
Baddie 2: A sheikh people referred to as the "Boss" who interestingly looked like Abu bakr Baghdadi
Baddie 3: The leader of the Rebel Army who looked a lot like Saddam.

:cheesy:

Overall it was fun to watch and clearly the Chinese put a lot of money and effort into the special effects, scene location and I was impressed with the technology and kit the Chinese Military have access to.

Plus it was fun to see an Enemy sniper balance his sniper rifle on a goats head

I give operation red sea 4/5.
