Mobile Data Speed: Bangladesh one of the worst in world


Bangladesh has one of the worst mobile internet speed among 110 countries surveyed by the recently published 2021 Digital Quality of Life index.

The overall ranking of Bangladesh is 103rd among the 110 countries.

India ranked 59th, Sri Lanka 88th and Pakistan 97th.

Bangladesh's rank dropped 25 places from last year and currently, it ranks 30th among 32 Asian countries. However, Bangladesh has ranked 16th in internet stability and 43rd in the broadband internet growth category.
Digital Quality of Life Index is a report published by Surfshark, a globally acclaimed VPN service company. The report indexes 110 countries of the world by looking at five fundamental pillars that define the digital quality of life.

These five pillars are: internet affordability, internet quality, electronic infrastructure, electronic security and electronic government.

These pillars consist of 14 (two more than last year) indicators that are interrelated and work together to measure the overall digital quality of life.

Well I also read such kind of reports I used to think that Internet speed was superb and it's achievement of BAL govt.

But later I was proven wrong.

So yes only achievement of BAL govt is electricity , not Internet.

Mobile Internet was good , but because of fast growing users , speed is becoming worse!

In Bangladesh except few places mobile data speed is 3rd class. But, optical fiber broadband lines are cheap and available almost everywhere in Bangladesh.

If fiber is cheap and mobile is bad, there is opportunity to small companies to give internet access to rural areas through WISP transmiting in 5ghz.

Well, my sister pays 1000 taka (little over 11 USD) for 30 Mbps unlimited and the line was installed for free and we were also given a massive discount on the router..

And YouTube was not throttled so we could stream 4k, If we wanted and it wouldn't lag.

Also access to BDIX which just a massive BD based Cloud service full of movies, games and other stuff for free.

I've used it and it's faster than anything I've used in Germany or Kuwait..


Ofc, it can't compete with 5G but that's mobile data.




I'd like to add, in Dhaka it would be even cheaper as there's much more competition.

Stop comparing with India, where with 1.4 billion people and millions of **** addicts, economies of scale are a thing.. drives prices down..

e.g. here in Spain a fiber connection only works in full speed if you access American services like Youtube, but it's slow as hell if you access Youku (Chinese Youtube clone).

And if a ISP offers their own streaming video services, that's not internet speed, it's their private network.

The more bandwidth an ISP has to slosh around the better the individual users connection.. even better, If the ISP doesn't have customers exceeding it's intended capacity.. that way there's no throttling.



Bangladesh has signed the contract for getting connected to its third submarine cable by 2024 and that'll further improve broadband speeds.


Until 2009 we had no submarine cable connections.




Also mobile data is slow because of some stupid regulatory policies by the government body that presides over these things.. they are not giving telecoms the spectrums demanded.. I'm no expert but the issue is more of a power struggle between the govt and the telecom operators.
