Military strike in NWA around the corner | The Nation

LAHORE – Since gruesome gun-attack on country’s youngest girl education campaigner, Malala Yousafzai in Swat has angered the entire nation; it has closed the doors for any possible peace talks between Islamabad and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) once and for all.
Highly-placed military sources confided to The Nation on Wednesday that the desperate attack in which Taliban elements openly targeted a teenage girl, has irritated the top commanders in the Pakistan Army, apart from the political leadership.
According to them, the military strike in North Waziristan Agency (NWA), the safe haven of Taliban and al Qaeda militants as portrayed in Western media, is imminent notwithstanding the country’s Armed Forces are already overstretched.
The authorities are also assessing the situation after the Army operation is launched in the NWA as the brutal assault has sparked outrage across the country, where people are demanding strong action against the Taliban, urging the Pak Army to strike against the terrorists wherever it is needed. The assault triggered protests in the cities all over the country while the public in general and students in particular held prayers for Malala’s early recovery on Wednesday.
Official sources said that the attack has also disturbed the political leadership as intense debate is underway in the Federal Capital whether a full-fledge strike is a must or only surgical strikes could help flush out militants from the insurgency-infested northwest Pakistan. The statement of the Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, claiming that they would not spare her even if she survived has added fuel to the fire. The Taliban’s claim is very much disturbing and is being taken very seriously by those who matters in the policymaking.
“The threat posed by the militancy suggests that Army action in NWA is in the best interest of Pakistan,” a senior official in the Defence Ministry told TheNation on the condition of anonymity.
However, he said, considering the internal dynamics of the country, it is important to comprehend that timings and magnitude of the military operation in NWA should be decided by Pak Army.
Well-informed sources said that the military has already suggested to the Federal government that “the internal dynamics of Pakistan dictate that a detailed and comprehensive strategy be formulated to cleanse areas infected by terrorism through shrewd corrective measures and judicious action with least collateral damage. Such strategy has to be indigenous one with blend of native society.”
“The visibly angry (military) Generals were seen keeping their fingers crossed during a closed-door meeting at the GHQ,” a military source familiar with the development said on Wednesday, requesting his identity not to be revealed. “Enough is enough. The red-lines are crossed and no more patience,” the source quoted one of the officers as telling his fellows.
At a time when the attack has angered the entire nation, all eyes are on GHQ in Rawalpindi as far as action against the militants is concerned.
“Presently, there is no ongoing military operation in NWA but the strike is imminent,” another source in the Defence Ministry said.
The Tuesday’s attack has triggered protests against the Taliban across the country, a rare phenomenon in a society where militants enjoy public support to some extent.
“Despite horrible and terrible Taliban bombings that shook the country during the last four to six years, we had never seen such public anger against Taliban,” a security expert said, adding, the attack on the 14-year-old rights activist has changed the scenario.
The students and civil society are on the streets. The politicians are condemning the brutal attack and the people are whispering against the Taliban at public crossings, he added.
It is important to mention here that the Indian officials and media, at the same time, have launched propaganda against Pakistan by projecting that US troops may get directly involved in NWA in case Pakistan Army undertakes an action in that area.
“Such propaganda is aimed at creating doubts about Pakistan’s commitment to war on terror. It is also a desperate attempt by the enemies of the country to indirectly force Pakistan to undertake operations in NWA,” the experts said.
According to them, international leaders and the coalition on War on Terror must understand that military operation against own people and own territory have far reaching implications, envisaging prudence and maturity of mind by visionary leadership.
There is no doubt that terrorism needs to be fought against and eliminated from Pakistani soil but Pakistan should reject all external pressures and propaganda onslaught against its sovereignty and matters related to national security.

Military won't go into N.Waziristan until the Americans and Afghans agree to clear up areas next to the border to shut the escape routes for the TTP.

I don't Think Sealing the Border in such a Mountainous Region is possible . Simultaneous Strikes can be launched from both sides so they are Suck between Metaphorical "Frying Pan and Fire" . But i guess that is also unlikely in the current Trust Levels

Whateva, the people on the other side of the border are responsible to make sure no one cross into Pakistan.
Pakistan already asked CIA and Afghan gov to fence the border. but they did not agreed. reason simple they do not want to stop their people to cross into Pakistan and create problem for us.

HAHA, more than 5 meetings took place in a field event in Messes, and other places, and numerous more keep on happening still. Planes flying in from Quetta, Karachi, Peshawar etc etc day in day out! Army is surely stressed out.

At topic: Let's hope that this is not a un-calculated knee-jerk reaction, but a well thought out plan taking into account all the assets at disposal, economics, etc etc.

I would support a operation in NWA personally, take these freaks out and send them to Afghanistan and try to secure the borders.

TTP are now slowly regrouping I think, and are being afforded a little window if time. Time to shut that window.

BTW< there were alot of rumors of a NWA op some weeks back, and a TTP confirmation of a op on 26 Aug even!!!

Military ‘ready for any sacrifice to eliminate terror’

ISLAMABAD: Top military body’s declaration on Thursday that it was ready for any sacrifice for eliminating terrorism sparked speculations about the possibility of a major military offensive against Tehrik-i-Taliban and other terror networks operating from tribal areas.

“Participants expressed their satisfaction over the standard of preparedness of Armed Forces to take on the upcoming challenges being faced by the country. It was reiterated that the resolve to fight the menace of terrorism will be kindred and Armed Forces of Pakistan are ready to render any sacrifice therein (sic),” a rather strongly-worded statement from ISPR said after the meeting.

The meeting, chaired by General Khalid Shameem Wynne, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Asif Sandila, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt, Secretary Defence, Secretary Defence Production, Chief of General Staff, Director-General Joint Staff, Director-General Inter Services Intelligence, Director-General Strategic Plans Division and senior military officers from the three services.

Although there weren’t any specific details in the statement, but it was widely interpreted as a signal from the army to Taliban that it was finally ready to take them on.

Reiterations from the top military leadership, in the past, about their commitment to counter-terrorism had always led to speculations about a major operation against militants being in the offing — the latest being Gen Kayani’s Azadi night speech at the Kakul Academy.

However, as no announcement came from the government or the military, the speculation died out. But the strong reaction
from the military leadership to the attack on Malala has once again triggered talk of a possible operation.

But, back-to-back statements from Army Chief Gen Kayani and Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, the principal military advisory body, and more importantly the raging anger in the country against the atrocious attack on a young activist who stood up for education of girls is being seen as an important development with regard to an all-out operation to flush terrorists out of their hideouts.

Gen Kayani’s late evening meeting with President Zardari made the rumour mills’ work overtime. No statement was issued either by the Presidency or ISPR, but some sources claimed that the two had met to discuss the security situation in the country and a possible response.

“We refuse to bow before terror. We will fight, regardless of the cost, we will prevail Insha Allah,” Gen Kayani had said after visiting Malala Yousufzai at a military hospital in Peshawar.

A top general, who was not authorised to officially speak, while sharing the military’s assessment said: “The situation is ripe, people are themselves asking for operation in North Waziristan.”

He, however, noted that a political decision would be required before initiating the operation.

Military had long avoided involving itself in a campaign in North Waziristan on the pretext that it was engaged in other parts of the tribal region. Now with no major operation taking place except for Orakzai Agency, the army may think it to be feasible to go into the area it had long avoided.

The National Assembly had in its meeting on Wednesday adopted a resolution stating that the house “resolves that until the establishment of peace in the great motherland, the rooting out of terrorists will continue”.

It’s not clear if the operation, whenever it takes place, would be restricted to TTP which claimed responsibility for the attack, and its affiliates or whether Haqqani network’s sanctuaries would also be targeted.

The Rawalpindi kidnapping of a retired brigadier with intelligence background may be yet another indication of things moving fast towards the ultimate face-off.
