At least five Pakistani soldiers have been killed in an attack by militants on their camp in the north-western tribal region of Khyber, officials say.

They said up to 60 militants stormed the camp, ramming an explosives-laden vehicle into one of its walls.

Officials say 25 of the attackers were killed. The Taliban have not commented and the claim cannot be verified.

Pakistani forces have been conducting limited operations in some parts of Khyber region for several months.

This has led to a decline in militant attacks in Peshawar, the regional capital, and on Nato supply trucks passing through Khyber region.

Officials say another 15 soldiers were injured in the fighting at the camp near Bara in Khyber.

Residents say the exchange of fire between the two sides continued throughout the night.

They said security forces launched a search operation on Wednesday morning to clear the area of militants.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says security operations have been going in the Bara area for several months.

The government has on a number of occasions claimed to have cleared militants out of the area, but attacks against government installations continue.

Violence has increased in Khyber since a Pakistani army offensive drove Taliban militants from their stronghold in South Waziristan to the south-west.
