Migrants seeking entry into the U.S. have been moved to a shelter farther south from the U.S.-Mexico border after the city government shut down the sports complex where they had been staying.
Citing "bad sanitary conditions," the city ceased operations at the Benito Juarez sports complex a week after hundreds of migrants rushed a port of entry between Tijuana and San Diego, Calif., prompting a temporary shutdown of the border crossing and the use of tear gas by U.S. border officials on migrants who attempted to cross into the U.S. illegally.
Buses moved the migrants to a federally run shelter 14 miles away from the San Ysidro port of entry, where asylum seekers file their applications, and 10 miles from the Otay Mesa border crossing, the Associated Press reported Saturday. They weren't forced to go to the new shelter, a former concert venue known as El Barretal, but Tijuana officials told the migrants that food and medical services at the Benito Juarez sports complex would no longer be available.
Last Sunday's border rush was a culmination of a worsening situation for the thousands of Central American migrants, who arrived in Tijuana in so-called caravans and were packed into shelters. Two days prior, the mayor of the city of 1.3 million declared a "humanitarian crisis."
Among the problems at the shelter, which has been way above capacity and was partially flooded, were the prevalence of mud, lice infestations, and respiratory infections.
President Trump has threatened to shut down the government this month if Congress does not fully fund his $5 billion border wall between the United States and Mexico.
