Pune: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has ruled out recruiting women for combat operations in armed forces due to apprehensions about their safety but said they would be encouraged to join other operational areas with their inclusion being stepped up in phases.

"No. Think of what can happen if a woman is taken as a prisoner in combat operation," he said, implying at possible atrocities they might suffer if held captive by enemy forces.

He, however, said except for combat role women will be encouraged to join other operational areas of the forces.

"This inclusion will be increased in phases," Parrikar said during a brief interaction with reporters on the sidelines of a passing out parade at the National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla near here.

On shortage of officers in the forces, he said the deficit is being reduced and the gap currently stood at 7,000 as against 11,000 earlier.

Parrikar said the admission capacity of the Academy, the premier institute which trains future officers of the three wings of the Armed Forces, too will be enhanced from existing 1950 to 2400 in next two years.

On his arrival on the campus, Parrikar reviewed a smartly turned out parade of the passing out cadets on the sprawling premises and asked them to cultivate a "sound mind and sound body" to serve the country with an emphasis on moral and ethical values.

He awarded the President's gold medal to cadet A K Sinha.

The silver and bronze medals were bagged by cadets Nishant Philip and R S Bisht.

the civilian women are pron to the same in troubled areas what is government doing for them ?so why just single out soldier women?

We have already seen the cruelties faced by Capt Saurav Khalia and his team.We still remember that.

So DM is absolutely right.

Cases are different.
One is accidentially happened and due to some psychopaths.Other is feeding our women to enemies. Our mens cant allow that. Now or Never.

Apart from that, women as combat pilots have been a big failure for obvious reasons.

What. Why?
& the reasons are

It is not that difficult to guess.

Productive life of a fighter pilot is 15-20 years. Even if we assume that a women has two children, it takes out 4-5 years or 1/3 of total productive life from that Fighter pilot's career as no airforce would put pregnant and lactating women in supersonic jets.Apart from that women have to benched for 2-3 days every month ,and due to tendency of periods of women to get synchronized when they are in a group, your whole women contingent would be benched simultaneously.

Eventually due to these reasons, you would anyway have to induct male pilots to fill for absence of women, and given the cost of pilot training, it is more prudent to induct males, economically; and it is tactically a better decision as male pilots would have higher availability than females.

I have called it a failure because induction of women in USAF has been a failure, and that program has been silently rolled back. Today, apart from some gender-equality trophies, women do not serve as combat pilot in any active airforce. They do serve actively in some Scandinavian airforces, but them these airforces are never going to fight a real war. First order of day for them would be call USA.
