5th generation fighter aborts flight at MAKS-2011 air show

21/08/2011

Russia's Sukhoi T-50 5th generation fighter aborted the takeoff at the MAKS-2011 International Aviation and Space Show on Sunday.

Earlier reports said that the fighter had made an emergency landing due to technical glitches. The pilot is alive.

"The T-50 fighter aborted not the flight but the takeoff from the Zhukovsky airfield," a spokesman for MAKS-2011 told RIA Novosti.

A flash was seen during the fighter's takeoff, after that the aircraft landed with a parachute, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

A senior aviation expert told RIA Novosti that this was normal for the period of test flights, especially in the conditions of high humidity and "taking into account the safety of the air show visitors."

The T-50, developed under the program PAK FA (Future Aviation System for Tactical Air Force) at the Sukhoi OKB, is expected to be put into service as soon as 2015.

The fighter performed its first public demonstration flight on Wednesday. The flight observed by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and other dignitaries.

The whole purpose of bring the T-50 to the air show is as a marketing move. This alone nullifies whatever positive press the T-50 had generated.

You do realize that every manufactuer around the world tries to market and sell their products sometimes at the expense of lossing millions on trials and marketing. Some of the biggest names in aviation were at MAKS, Airbus and Boeing brought some of their latest products to the show. Vendors from all around the world, including the United States, Germany, France ect were in attendance. Over 6 billion in contracts were signed between dozens of forign and domestic vendors.

Case in point Sukhoi can sell aircraft, i can't say the same for everyone. And realize much of what is presented at MAKS is a matter of national pride. The SU-47 has been at MAKS multiple times but who are they going to sell a technology demonstrator to? A technology demonstrator that was never intended for production.

.
i dont wanna go off topic, but i watched a documentary a very long time ago about Soviet Fighters. and they said that Su-47 and Mig-1.44 were developed to replace Su-27 and Mig-29, but after the collapse of soviet Union, they could not finance both programs. therefore a decision was made to upgrade the older Sukhoi and Mig fleet, thats why we have Su-30/35/37 now and same with Migs...

How ?

all aircrafts see glitches in development stage . F-22 even after getting developed completely faces accidents here and there but nobody declares it as a failure and it remains the best aircraft in the world right now .

Its too early to say anything about Pak-fa at this stage .what press it gets will matter only after it gets fully developed in a few years .
