Fahim says he knew from day one he would not be PM

ISLAMABAD: A heartbroken Makhdoom Amin Fahim revealed on Saturday evening that Asif Ali Zardari had sealed his fate on the very first day that the PPP co-chairman announced his nomination at Naudero on December 30.
Zardari, he said, while sitting beside him at the first press conference after Benazir Bhutto's death, knew very well that he would not be Zardari's final choice.
Fahim said he only remained in the race to honour the wishes of his martyred leader who always wanted to see him as the prime minister in his absence.
Amid the most testing time of his political life, Fahim in an emotional tone recounted how 40 years back, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had personally come to meet him in London, with the invitation to convince his mighty father Makhdoom Talibul Moula to join his party and he had achieved this Herculean task of making his father join Bhutto.
"The PPP is in my blood, it was formed at Hala and I can't think of causing any harm to this party by creating any rift", Makhdoom Amin Faheem said.
"Listen, I had told Asif Zardari at Zardari House in very frank words last week that I would not vote for the prime minister he would nominate, come what may. But now I would go to parliament only to vote for Yousuf Raza Gilani", Amin Fahim said.
When asked whether he would go to the parliament house for the last time to vote for Gilani, and would otherwise stay away from parliament, Makhdoom replied that he would not say anything about his future role or whether he would go to parliament.
His continuous reluctance to reply to whether he would go to parliament for the last time, gave a clear idea that Amin Fahim would not return to the assembly in the near future and might adopt a low profile political and personal life.
Fahim also made it clear that he would not accept any government office in the PPP government but he refused to give any commitment about his elder son.
Giving his reaction to this correspondent after the announcement of the prime minister candidate, Amin Fahim opened his heart and said that the moment Asif Zardari announced at Naudero that he (Makhdoom) would be the candidate for the slot of prime minister but that the party would finally decide the name, he had realised within seconds that Asif Zardari would not make him the prime minister. But he nevertheless kept quiet.
In an interview with The News some days ago, Amin Fahim had openly said that he was being humiliated, insulted and betrayed by the party. But he did not repeat these words on Saturday and preferred to remain silent when asked if he was still feeling betrayed and insulted.
Fahim revealed that Asif Zardari was sitting besides him making certain announcements to the media after the marathon meeting of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the PPP. Fahim said when Zardari was asked by the media men about the future prime minister, Zardari replied to them that Amin Fahim would be our candidate. But Fahim said a few might have noticed that Zardari had hastened to add that "the party would decide about it".
Fahim said that single sentence had sealed his fate as he got the loud message that he would not be the prime minister after all, irrespective of the fact that in public and before the media Zardari was committing to make him the prime minister.
But Amin Fahim said, despite having strong reservations, he remained part of the race for the slot of prime minister, in the memory of Benazir Bhutto who always wanted him to become prime minister in case she was not available.
That was why, Fahim said, he always kept telling people that he was hopeful that he would become the prime minister.
Fahim added that since the very day it was founded his family had been very loyal to the PPP as it was part of the party. He said he would not leave the PPP as it was in his blood. He said in the past he got many offers to become prime minister but he always refused to join the power corridors through the back door.
"The office of prime minister is not so big for me that I should be desperate for it", Fahim said. I want to see the PPP a strong party and will not create any rift at this stage. That is why, he said, he had decided to go and vote for Yousuf Raza Gilani.
