NEW DELHI: India is considering a proposal to make it mandatory for the strategic sectors of Defence, Space and Atomic Energy to use 'made in India' chips in an initiative that will meet not only national security needs but also kick start the domestic semi-conductor manufacturing business that has been struggling to take off.

Sources said that preliminarily talks on the matter have already taken place and a meeting that included top government representatives from the strategic departments of space, atomic energy, information technology and defence research took place at the Niti Aayog recently.

At the heart of the issue is the setting up of two semi-conductor fabrication facilities in India that were cleared by the UPA government in 2013 but have still not taken off given a lack of direction and government support for the very high investment units.

Officials say that the government is aware that 'Made in India' chips and electronics are necessary in national interest, given the dependence currently India has on imported products that can be rigged and bugged.

"There is a fear of overdependence on foreign sources for such a vital thing. Cases of spurious and even suspicious electronic parts from abroad have come to light, making it necessary for at least the core strategic sectors to have an Indian option," an senior official told ET.

Officials have also identified cyber security at a key area where India made chips can be encouraged, given that it falls within the purview of the government. By most estimates, the strategic electronics industry in India is worth over Rs 12,000 crore annually and growing.

"It is clear that the semi-conductor industry has to stand up on its own and be competitive. However, the industry will never take off on its own due to the global competition. Encouragement in the form of a firm, committed market will be useful in starting the industry," the senior official said.

Very important step. We also really need to accept the cost and build a damn fab!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many people know that Intel wanted to start the Fab initially in India about 30 years ago. Damn bureaucracy, corruption and politics!!! We carry the industry but have nothing in our country to show for it!!! :tsk::cry:

You just cannot enforce it just like that.

We are heavily dependent when it comes to these chips. It has to be a phased process.

This could well be a Game Changer for Indian Electronic and Defence Industry in the next few years

just bluff and puff but unable to finish cleanly

Trust me. We can. The centre just needs to give it a strategic angle to fast-track the process. It's high time man. the situation is highly unfortunate. Of-course, I'm not blaming the present govt. It's just that they can actually do it and unlike the Congress, will actually follow up on it.

Please don't speak about stuff you have no idea about.
A lot of big projects have been successful. For any big project in a massive developing country like India, the challenges are almost too much. However, the situation improves with every year.

Yes we can, no doubts about that.
But, we cannot start an industry overnight.
Fabrications are done in less than 20 nm nowadays. We lack the industrial base for that. So, instead of halting imports first, and then building an industry, we should go other way around. It'll take a large number of 'industrially-skilled' workforce.
Trust me when I say this, there is a difference between the education provided in an Engineering College and first hand industrial training & experience.
An Engineering College will ensure that a student has got his basics right and he will not fall from the sky when he will start working on, say, VLSI..

Fab City Hyderabad has been an EPIC FAIL
Ya it's a sad affair. I have been a long supporter of the idea that we should take technical support from Pakistan in high tech industries like Fab Labs, Space Exploration, Astronomy, Software, Water Management, Transportation and related R&D etc. But I dunno why GoI is not interested !! I think you should publish the great ground breaking discoveries Pakistan has achieved in theses areas.

do you have any idea on costs that need to be incurred in order to establish a fab ?? yes hyderabad fab city has failed to attract investments.. but the city is doing good in IT and pharma sectors..

I know that man. I work in the industry. I also know that we have enough professionals (that are industrially skilled) to start up at-least 3-4 different fabs in India. I agree that the industrial base has to be built. That's what I've been asking for.
