LAHORE – The provincial Energy Minister Ch Abdul Ghafoor has said that within the span of three years, energy crisis would be eliminated for goods from country especially from Punjab province as Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has taken this problem on top priority to solve. In this regard, local investors would be given preference to invest in energy sector rather than international lending agencies like World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
He expressed these views on the concluding day of two-day seminar on solar energy jointly conducted by Tuwairqi Steel Mills Limited Engineering and world renowned SolarWorld of Germany here at a local hotel on Tuesday.
The Minister said that energy crisis brought a devastated disaster in the country where million of people have been rendered jobless while wheel of industry has virtually been halted as Federal government did not take interest in solving this basic problem. However, he said, now Punjab government is taking steps to solve this serious menace since Federal government had delegated powers to provinces after 18th Amendment.
He said that in Nawaz Sharif’s era, Indian PM, during his visit to Lahore, asked for the supply of Pakistan’s surplus electricity to India but conversely now Pakistan is begging for electricity from India to keep country’s industry alive. He claimed that changes usually come to happen because of visionary leaders and not by Governors, CMs or PMs slots adding that it is the blessing of Almighty God that we have now visionary leadership among us.
He said that local entrepreneurs are shifting their entities to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other countries in the region as there is scarcity of energy in the country but Punjab government is now striving hard to sign MoUs with Germany, Turkey and other countries of the world to overcome shortage of power. He claimed that within a span of three years, there would be no loadshedding of power in the country, especially in Punjab province. He asserted that those local investors who have been shifted into other countries would not only come back to their homeland with their entities but foreign investors would also prefer to invest in Pakistan as Pakistan is a land of opportunities. He quoted the example of Korean company Daewoo whose business is flourishing day after day here in the country.
Ch Abdul Ghafoor claimed that Punjab Chief Minister has pledged that province is going to be converted into solar energy system while Lahore would be transformed into LED (light emitting diodes) lights which consume a meager amount of energy.
He appreciated the efforts of TSML Project Director Zaigham Adil Rizvi who after investing over $400 million in steel sector has brought steel industry out of crisis. Ch Abdul Ghafoor maintained that Rizvi’s initiatives would eradicate darkness from the country as he has entered into solar power system. He said that so far Zaigham’s TSML has electrified parliament building at Islamabad, Shadman Mall plaza at Lahore, Danish Schools in various cities, Beaconhouse building in Lahore and various flood-affected homes at Muzaffargarh by installing solar panel system. However, he said India has gained over 1,000MW through this system and we are just hovering over 50MW which could not be completed so far, he added.
SolarWorld Head of Engineering and Technical Support Kai Klingenhagen said that even developing countries in the region are far ahead from Pakistan in this regard. Bangladesh government with the financial assistance of World Bank has electrified over one million homes through solar energy system while another one million homes are being provided electricity through this off-grid system.
