Khizr Khan, the Gold Star father of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, killed in 2004 in Iraq, lashed out at U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump Tuesday Politico reported, saying he was “saddened all over again” to hear Trump invoke his son’s name during Sunday night’s second presidential debate.
Khizr Khan gained notoriety as an unexpected star of the Democratic National Convention this past summer for his rebuke of the candidate, pulling out a pocket version of the U.S. Constitution asking if Trump had ever read the document.
Khizr Khan was angered after Democrat Hillary Clinton’s completed remarks concerning Humayun Khan and Trump said, “Captain Khan is an American hero and if I were president at that time he would be alive today,” saying the New York real estate mogul’s remarks lacked even a modicum of sincerity, the report said.
“I was saddened all over again that this candidate lacks the character, lacks the ability to understand the pain of those that have sacrificed their lives in defense of this country.” – Khizr Khan
“For this candidate to put his political expediency ahead of any realization of pain and suffering of the families is shameful,” Khirzr Khan said. “I have said it two months ago, that this candidate does not have the character to be the commander in chief of the armed forces.”
In his speech to a packed convention hall in Philadelphia, Khirzr Khan told Trump “you have sacrificed nothing.” The scathing rebuke from a Muslim immigrant family whose son is buried at Arlington National Cemetery seemed a tailor-made rebuttal to Trump’s campaign rhetoric and it almost immediately put the Manhattan billionaire on the defensive, the report said.
In response to Khizr Khan’s speech and subsequent media interviews, Trump launched a damaging multi-day feud with the family.
Khizr Khan said that he has been reluctant to speak out so vociferously against Trump, opening himself and his family up to attacks from the Manhattan billionaire’s supporters. The father said he has done so only because he feels it is a means of honoring his son, the report said.
“Look, our son gave his life in protection of this country, in protection of constitution. He was honorable to his oath. We do all this under his grace, under his light, care for this country, care for this nation. How could a patriot American sit and watch this mockery of the democratic process that this candidate has conducted himself?” Khizr Khan said.
