MACHINIST - Kemrock Industries commissions Carbon Fibre Facility near Vadodara

Vadodara: Kemrock Industries and Exports Ltd, a manufacturer of FRP and composites in India, has commissioned India's first Carbon Fibre Facility near Vadodara in Gujarat. The company has invested nearly Rs. 200 crore in setting up this facility, with technical know-how from Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore.

The initial manufacturing capabilities of 400 tpA will produce aerospace grade carbon fiber and prepregs. In the second phase, which is expected to be completed in four to five months, another 400 tpA will be added, taking the capacity of the plant to 800 tpA. The new plant expected to start commercial production soon.

Kalpesh Patel, chairman & managing director, Kemrock Industries, said that the company plans to invest Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 crore ($300 to 400 million) in next five years and Rs 300 to Rs 400 crore for expansion of the Saertex Kemrock JV in the current year. He also said that talks for setting up joint venture projects were progressing.

The project investment of Rs. 200 crores has been financed through a mix of equity, debt and internal accruals.

The carbon fiber manufacturing facility is fully integrated, which includes polymerization, wet spinning, oxidization & carbonization and includes all utilities for effluent & waste management. This integration will ensure the right quality of precursor (special acrylic fiber) for aerospace grade carbon fiber, thereby serving the nation's requirements in those defence & aerospace sectors lead by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.(HAL), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) & Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).

Over the next five years Kemrock is expected to supply supply approximately 1,500 tonnes of carbon fibre products to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).

"With the commissioning of this unit, we complete the most ambitious project since our inception. Today, we unveil a new chapter that would propel our company to greater heights in the coming years. ln-house production of carbon fibre is the first step towards establishing a self sufficient domestic capability to produce composite products for the aerospace, defence and wind energy markets. The carbon fibre capability will be a strategic fit to our existing operations, augmenting our resin production, technical fabric capability and moulding ability," said Kalpesh Patel.

Some of the production from the new plant will be exported to USA, European countries and other countries after meeting the domestic requirements.

The plant was inaugurated by the Former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on Sunday.

Shri.Nitinbhai Patel (Minister-Gujarat State, Water supply,Water Resources (Excluding Kalpsar Division),Urban Development & Urban Housing, Dr. K Radhakrishnan (Chairman, ISRO) (Chairman and Secretary Department of Space), Dr. V K Saraswat (Scientific Advisor to RM and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D), Prof Samir K Brahmachari Director General (CSIR) & Secretary (DSIR) were present on the occasion.
