No more images of gods, goddesses on t-shirts

BANGALORE: Muzrai minister Kota Srinivas Poojary is in the news again.

After directing government-run temples to perform special poojas by spending more than Rs 18 crore to ward of drought in the state, Poojary on Wednesday said the government plans to ban indecent depiction of images of Hindu gods and goddesses especially on dress materials and cracker packs.
"Many complaints have been received from the public on printing of such photos indecently on 't' Shirts and cracker packs. The issue would be discussed with state-level Dharmika Parishath (highest decision making body on religious affairs in Karnataka) on January 3," Poojary told TOI.
The minister also said muzrai department plans to observe one day in a year as 'Dharmika Dinacharane' (day of religious celebrations) and the date would be finalised after consultation with the parishath.
Noted constitutional expert, Ravivarma Kumar, slammed the move saying it would affect freedom of speech and expression. "The government has no power to impose such restrictions," he said.

Poojary in July had issued a circular to 34,000 government-run temples to conduct 'abhishekha,' 'varuna mantra,' 'jalabhishekha' and several other rituals to ward of severe drought and also for the welfare of people and cattle.
The circular has drawn flak from the opposition parties, who said the money meant for these rituals could have been allotted for relief work.

The Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations had taken severe umbrage to what it described as unconstitutional behaviour of the state government in ordering poojas to be performed at temples across the state for rains.

You know once I see this gori girl with a Shiva tshirt, they just think its cool and looks good but for us that is religious and we should respect it and not wear such items. There was a big uproar before as in France one company they were making sandals with Hindu images and when certain Hindu organisations found out they got them to stop.

Aren't you sensible enough to differentiate between printing it on T-shirt and a sandal. It's a slippery slope and every persons sensitivity is different but that doesn't mean that you ban the entire thing. don't be adamant on walking backward, like those Islamic fundamentalists, image of Hindus in my mind is as a tolerant, sensible, and progressive group.

agree with respect for religion.

why people should sell religion who claim to respect it the most.
