Karachi: The city’s murder rate has come down significantly ever since law enforcement agencies launched a rigorous operation against criminals and outlaws in early September, official data shows.
The number of murders committed in September stood at 155 compared to 280 in August showing a 50 per cent decrease.
Officials credit operation launched to counter outlaws with reduction in murder rate
“In the hospital we would get 16 to 18 gunshot victims daily before the operation,” said Aftab Chunar, who oversees the medico legal affairs at the Civil Hospital.
“But now three to four bodies are brought, showing remarkable results,” he said.
However, during the current year, the total number of murders since January 1 to September 30, stood at 2,058 compared to 2,300 during the whole of last year.
The operation was launched in the city after murders, extortion, kidnapping for ransom and robberies reached a high compelling the federal government to take notice of the alarming situation.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held marathon meetings with political parties and the provincial government of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to convince them to organise an even handed operation against criminal elements in different political parties and gangs.
Paramilitary rangers were given special investigative powers, which, along with the assistance of police, helped carry out over a thousand raids and operations in hundreds of turbulent hideouts and areas.
On Friday, a rangers’ spokesman said that the rangers had conducted an intelligence driven joint raid in the New Karachi area and arrested a notorious contract killer and ring leader whose name was Shujjat Hashmi.
He said that Shujjat was involved in numerous cases of politically motivated killings.
In earlier joint operations in Lyari, Garden and New Karachi, police and rangers arrested three contract killers. Three of the killers, Zahid, Kashif and Sohail, were arrested from Lyari and Garden.
Most criminals and killers are on the run and law enforcement agencies have been chasing and arresting them from other parts of the country.
Two extortionists and contract killers were arrested from the eastern city of Lahore on Friday. Police said that Khazri Baluch and Azizullah Baluch belonged to a gang in Lyari and were traced in the Anar Kali area of the city.
