KARACHI: The Anti-Extremism Cell (AEC) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday arrested four suspected members of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Sher Khan Group. The suspects were allegedly involved in more than 30 target killings including those of cops and political activists. Thirty kilograms of explosive materials, four hand grenades, three Kalashnikovs, three 9MM pistols and a number of live bullets were also recovered from their possession.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammad Aslam Khan of the AEC, in a press briefing, said a spy informed the police that some TTP terrorists were present in the Manghopir area and were planning on carrying out a devastating attack on different political offices.
The SSP, along with his team, raided the Sultanabad area and were going up the hills when the militants opened fire at them. The police shot back and an encounter broke out, which culminated with four suspected terrorists being captured.
During the initial interrogation, the detained men disclosed their names as Abdul Wahid, Kareem Khan, Shauib Alam and Adil Nawab. They admitted that they were active members of the TTPs Sher Khan Group.
The suspects confessed that they operated out of the Peerabad, Sohrab Goth and Manghopir areas.
The notorious leader of the group, Sher Khan, was wanted by the police in extortion and terrorism cases. He was present at the Manghopir hideout when the AEC team raided the area on Monday, but he managed to escape.
One of the arrested men, Adil Nawab, told the cops that he had escaped from the Bannu Jail last year when the prison was attacked by the Taliban. He also said that he was arrested in 2005 and sentenced to life in 2008.
He disclosed that on November 25, 2012 he and his accomplices, who had planned on attacking the Ashura procession, were fleeing from the police. The law enforcers killed one of the militants and arrested some of the others, he added. The groups leader Sher Khan also escaped on this occasion. Nawab confessed to his involvement in more than 30 murder cases and said the group was involved in extortion.
Meanwhile, the police found that Abdul Wahid was sent to Waziristan, where he learned to make bombs and operate lethal weapons. He then moved back to Karachi, where he helped the TTP with its terror activities.
The police said that the accomplices of Wahid planted a motorcycle bomb outside the Mustafa Imambargah in Abbas Town and two other explosive devices in the Peerabad area during Muharram. Wahid said that he was arrested in 2008 by the CID under section 4/5 Explosive Act and 13-D, but a court released him in 2010.
CID has really been extremely effective against terrorists of the TTP. I really have to give them credit.
