Parliament passes historic land accord bill to redraw border with Bangladesh

NEW DELHI: Parliament on Thursday passed the constitutional amendment bill regarding the land boundary agreement with Bangladesh, with the Lok Sabha's unanimous nod to the legislation.

"Historic milestone in India-Bangladesh relations," Prime Minister Modi tweeted after the Lok Sabha's nod. Modi also thanked opposition parties for support to the bill and spoke to his counterpart Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina over the issue.

The bill was unanimously passed by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday when members buried their sharp ideological divide - from Shiv Sena to CPM - to unanimously give effect to the Land Boundary Agreement signed between India and Bangladesh in 1974 for exchange of enclaves.

External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj won the hearts of the entire opposition on Wednesday by crediting Manmohan Singh government for putting in the hard work. "Manmohan Singh is the one who started the whole thing. I have merely completed the task," she said, thanking the former PM who was present in the Rajya Sabha. She pointed out that the bill is exactly the same - to the last comma and full stop - as was presented by UPA in Parliament in December 2013. "It's a win-win-win situation for everyone," she said, ascribing the quote to leader of opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad. Calling the passage of the bill "historic", Swaraj said it would take India-Bangladesh relations to a new high by settling the 41-year border issue.

The bill aims at giving effect to the acquiring of territories by India and transfer of territories to Bangladesh through retaining of adverse possession and exchange of enclaves in accordance with the 1974 agreement.

Dispute can be settled peacefully and friendly without fighting a war!!!! last year Bay of Bengal dispute and this year land dispute. Bangladesh need not have to send army and even did not sent non state actors---still dispute resolved where both parties are satisfied---- strange !!!

Let us hope same good spirit is shown to Kashmiri people and their land dispute is settled as well.

Requires Pakistan to give up its claim on Kashmir.

And Kashmiris showed him the middle finger and even liberated a sizeable portion known as azad Kashmir.

If its Azad or liberated we say, then how it become Pakistan territory? Isnt it should be an independent country in this analogy. Moreover, then there claims on J&K are more legalized?

What happened to GB,, isnt that is also part of Kashmir? Isnt thats backstab?

Come and get if you have what it takes...

If you're expecting good spirit from the Indians you're sorely mistaken. You talk about the settlement of Kashmir? These people are having sleepless nights over Pakistan... The partition is still very vivid in their memories. There can be no genuine peace with India for the simple reason that it doesn't seek to have any peace in the first place. India is still stuck in the pre-partition mindset... The Indians cannot fathom the creation of Pakistan. Kashmir is an entirely different issue.

India already has the part that is needed. Pakistan has the vast useless land. Its Pakistan that wants Kashmir, and not to liberate it. They want it.
If Kashmir is to get freedom and their own constitution there chances are better under India rule of this happening since Article 370 states this and any removal of this article would mean a plebiscite. However a plebiscite would require Pakistan armies removal of Azad Kashmir. By all means, act like it matters.
Pakistans hatred for India is not Kashmir, that only become a scapegoat. Pakistans real aim is to throw off India in its development so that it may never be regional hegemont as the Pakistanis believe it India to be.
India accepts Pakistan as an independent nation, they have no interest in re assimilated Pakistan in to India, fencing the border shows attitude. The interest is from Pakistanis some of which believe they expecially these bihari muslims that left in 47 that they are right full rulers of Hindustan. Absurd as this is, this attitude was created by your Army carried out by ISI so to have your own identity. That of not Indian. They succeeded. Today Pakistani's have identity of a boiling pot for terrorist organizations meanwhile your own people live in denial of this and act as if RAW is doing this. If RAW was behind this, India would not try to flex military muscle as they have done in the past. Right now RAW is a sleeping threat to Pakistan and its stability largely thanks to pressure from your allies the USA whom doesn't want a long war in Afghanistan. Surprisingly Pakistanis hate America even though America provides AID something that the Chinese don't even give you in the quantity they have done. Something like 27 billion dollars and those are not loans or investments that the Chinese give you.
Pakistan...a deformed twin of India on life support as of now. That is Pakistans real identity.

Tbh indians hardly care what happens in Pakistan, As far as I know people told me that pakistan isn't even a topic of discussion. On the other hand pakistan is obsessed with India.Even I life India sends a spacecraft pakistan is like" Another indian conspiracy to destroy islam, occupy kashmir and attack pakistan".
Homie no one in world cares about u, people over the world take u as a country facing war, terrorism and extremist. On the other hand india is taken as A country of opportunities. Just see here in UK a political party has risen Against Pakistanis and Islam.
I am glad I voted for UKIP.

I don't think it is going to happen, for such feat one needs democracies to work diplomatically and come to solution in which both parties settle on something. Politics and diplomacy is about making decisions, which one can say "grey" area...requiring compromise by both parties. Both Bangladesh and India are democratic country where the civilian government calls the shot...in other words "the jockey rides the horse"...
Unfortunately, Pakistan isn't a true democracy...it have and has military directly or indirectly..in other words "the horse is riding the jockey". Armed personnels do not make compromises...they are not trained in that manner. So as long the Pakistan Army calls the shot on the Kashmir issue no solution can be reached even if the civil diplomatic people comes up with some plan. So, we will have to wait till the elected machinery (government) of Pakistan governs and directs the army and not the other way round. It hasn't happened for 64 years now... might take another 64 years.

And Kashmiris showed him the middle finger and even liberated a sizeable portion known as azad Kashmir.
Well you liberate Balochistan first...then India might think something about Kashmir.

Kashmiris or as the worlds calls them Pakistan fed Kabaili/Lashkars. Who were blasted of by Sikh regiment the moment it landed on Srinagar Airport.
