Israel is planning to deploy David's Sling missile- defense system in the next two weeks, local media reports Monday.

The David’s Sling exact deployment date is not specified but Brig. Gen. Tzvika Haimovitch, head of the army’s Aerial Defense Command told Times of Israel that it should occur “around two weeks from today”.

“In the next few weeks we will finish a long process of testing a new weapons system that will join the air force,” Lt.-Col. Kobi Regev, the David’s Sling battalion commander told The Jerusalem Post. “The new and more advanced system, which is connected with our two older systems, the Iron Dome and Arrow Missile Defense System, is more relevant to the threats posed to Israeli citizens”.

A large corps of soldiers have already been drafted to train on the new system, coming from all disciplines with experience in other air-defense systems.

As tensions mount between Israel and its neighbors, the country’s David's Sling missile defense system will be operationally ready in the next two weeks.

“In the next few weeks we will finish a long process of testing a new weapons system that will join the air force,” said Lt.-Col. Kobi Regev, the David’s Sling battalion commander. “The new and more advanced system, which is connected with our two older systems, the Iron Dome and Arrow Missile Defense System, is more relevant to the threats posed to Israeli citizens.”

Along with the Iron Dome, which is designed to intercept short-range rockets, and the Arrow, which intercepts ballistic missiles outside of the Earth’s atmosphere, David’s Sling intercepts tactical ballistic missiles, medium- to long-range rockets, as well as cruise missiles fired at ranges between 40 km.-300 km.

Together the systems will provide a comprehensive protective umbrella able to counter threats posed by both short- and midrange missiles used by Hezbollah and Gazan terrorist groups, as well as the threat posed by more sophisticated long-range Iranian ballistic missiles.

On Friday, Arrow intercepted a Syrian army ballistic missile fired toward Israel. It was the first time the system was used since it came into service 17 years ago.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has also warned that his group is able to hit “the entirety of occupied Palestine with missiles,” but according to a senior IDF officer in the Air Defense Command, the addition of the David’s Sling to Israel’s air defenses now enables the IDF to protect more territory from enemy rockets or missiles.

“The addition of David's Sling’s has brought Israel’s air-defense systems to a whole new level,” he said. “We are now able to protect more of the country from aerial threats.”

A large corps of soldiers have already been drafted to train on the new system, coming from all disciplines with experience in other air-defense systems, he said.

Brig.-Gen. Zvika Haimovich, commander of the Aerial Defense Division, said in July at the ceremony marking the establishment of the David’s Sling Battalion that the “system has a significant added value to the aerial-defense world, and the process of making it operational is complex and doesn’t only amount to integrating the system, but it also has to do with accumulating professional and operational knowledge, with infrastructure and most importantly – with people.”

David’s Sling is a joint Israeli- US project, with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems collaborating with American defense contractor Raytheon, which also produces the Patriot missile system. Other components of the system were developed by Elta, a subdivision of Israel Aerospace Industries, which developed the system’s radar, and the Elisra subdivision of Elbit Systems, which developed the command and control mechanisms.

So ... You will be able to target previous generations!

Good for you !!!

No, I meant as in air defense, not against ballistic threats.
Air defence and ballistic defence are quite different things. In terms of air defence Israel has currently only Patriots + naval Baraks.

Israel unveiled on Sunday the latest addition to its multilevel missile defense system with David's Sling, a joint Israeli-U.S. project designed to intercept medium-range missiles.

David’s Sling -- which sees Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems collaborating with American defense contractor Raytheon -- also produces the Patriot missile system.

The system is designed to shoot down incoming rockets with ranges of 25 to 190 miles (40-300 kilometers), targeting mostly the missiles that were fired by the Lebanese Hezbollah organization toward Israel in recent years. It will make up the middle tier of Israel’s multi-layer missile defense capabilities.

The lowest layer is the Iron Dome system, capable of intercepting short-range rockets, small unmanned aerial vehicles and some mortar shells like those that have been fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip or from southern Lebanon. And at the top are the Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 systems, which are intended to engage long-range ballistic missiles. The Arrow was put in use for the first time on March 17, when it intercepted an incoming Syrian anti-aircraft missile.

At the event at the Air Force’s Hatzor base in central Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the “cutting-edge technology” of David’s Sling will help protect Israel against its enemies. “Whoever seeks to hit us – will be hit. Whoever threatens our existence – places himself in existential danger,” he said.

Referring to the biblical story of David and Goliath, Netanyahu added that just as King David protected the Jewish people 3,000 years ago, Israel will continue to follow in his footsteps.

Netanyahu also acknowledged and thanked the U.S. administration for its support “At a time when budgets are tight, know that the government and people of Israel are grateful for the ongoing support by the United States."

The director of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Navy Vice Admiral James D. Syring, also attended the ceremony. In his remarks, Syring said that the delivery of this system was due to years of hard work and heralds a "new tier of aerial defense.”

“It is an impressive day for an already impressive year," he said, referring to developments and testing of several different aerial defense systems.

The head of the Israeli Air Force, Maj.-Gen. Amir Eshel, stated during his speech that the air force “will continue to grow in our capabilities and defense abilities in a turbulent Middle East and the new technology we received will bring the air force to a whole new level of defense for the State of Israel."

However, with Hezbollah expected to fire more than 1,000 rockets per day in a future conflict with Israel, military and political officials have warned that even the three layers of missile defense will not be capable to maintaining a 100 percent success rate.
