Iraq Accuses Turkey of Interfering in Affairs

Iraq on Thursday accused Turkey of interfering in its internal affairs after Turkey's foreign minister paid a surprise visit to a northern Iraqi city seen as a testing ground for whether Iraq's sectarian leaders can ever reach reconciliation.

Ahmet Davutoglu visited the city of Kirkuk, where an estimated 850,000 Kurds, Turkomen and Arabs uneasily co-exist — and that Iraqi Kurds hope to annex into their autonomous region. Turkey, Iran and Syria have long feared that Kurdish rule of Kirkuk would encourage separatist sentiment within their Kurdish minorities.

Davutoglu said on his Twitter account on Thursday that he was "proud to be the first Turkish FM to visit Kirkuk in 75 years," adding that "Kirkuk will be a city where our Arab, Kurd and Turkomen brothers live in peace forever."

Iraq's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website that Davutoglu's visit to Kirkuk was "not appropriate" and an "interference in the internal affairs of Iraq." It warned that Turkey would "bear the consequences," which would negatively affect relations between the two neighbors.

Turkey's ties with Baghdad had already deteriorated after Turkey allowed Iraq's fugitive vice president, Tariq al-Hashemi, to stay in Istanbul for medical reasons.

"It is not in the interest of Turkey or any other party to underestimate the national sovereignty" of Iraq, the statement said, adding that the visit was staged "without the knowledge and approval of the ministry."

Davutoglu is in northern Iraq as part of a visit in which he struck a rare deal with Iraq's self-ruled Kurdish region to jointly tackle any threat from a violent group that exploits the power vacuum in Syria, an apparent reference to Turkish Kurdish rebels who are now operating in northern Syria.

Kurdish rebels have been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's southeast for the last 28 years, and Turkey is increasingly worried that the chaos in Syria will open up a new base for them.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry also chided the regional Kurdish administration for facilitating the visit without seeking the approval of Baghdad.

Turkey on Thursday staged a second military drill along the Syrian border across areas where the Kurdish rebels said to be operating. Turkey has repeatedly struck rebel bases in northern Iraq and threatened to retaliate against any attack by the rebels from Syria as it maintained its military drive against Kurdish rebels inside the country.

Turkey last week granted residence permit to al-Hashemi, a Sunni Muslim, before his visa expired. Al-Hashemi is on trial in absentia in Baghdad on charges of supporting death squads whose targets included government officials and Shiite Muslim pilgrims.

Also last week, Turkey started importing crude oil from northern Iraq under a deal with the Iraqi Kurdish administration. Turkey separately imports oil from Iraq through a twin-pipeline that runs from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean oil terminal of Ceyhan.

Then they should do their job and control the region properly.

Turkey took a 180 degree turn from bombing kurds to negotiating with kurds?

We never clashed with the North Iraq, we're only clashing witH PKK.

Big construction projects in N. Iraq are taking place. Its is better of under kurdish autonomy for the Turkish economy and industry. Under Iraqi rule will bring choas and disorder...

This means that we accept a independent kurdish state. This means that we accept the Sevr and accept the PKK and its mission. This means that we support the deviding of Iraq. This means that we will have a kurdish consulate a kurdish embassy in Turkey. Today Barzani looking for north Syria, what if the kurds in Turkey rebels?? Then Barzani will have a eye on south east Turkey to. We have then kurdish people, pesmerge, pkk, UN, US at front of us just like how they are acting now on syria scenario..

Must idiotic foreign policiy we ever saw in Turkish history.

I would rather see a Kurdish government in Northern Iraq than an Iranian supported Iraqi government. What is wrong with having a Northern Iraqi Kurdish consulate in Ankara? Some people need to adjust to contemporary world. What is with you guys and Kurds? We don't have problems with Kurds, we have problem with PKK.

What iraqi ground. The borders Are artificial made on a desk by French and the britts.
The Kurds have lived there for more than 2000 years. And it's natural that they whant to speak there own language on there ansestors grounds.

That land belongs to Kurds Arabs and turkmens that means EVERYONE that lives there not just arabs.

And by the way turkey belongs to every One with a TC passport that includes Kurds too.

What is nonsense about this can you explain? If you use the argument like Vatoz, then the 5-8 million kurds in Turkey will also claim that the ground belongs to them, what you gonna say then? Yes, you guys are right just take it.. I know you are a kurd and fully support this so the one that is nonsense are you not me.

If you really a support a Kurdish state, you guys should give your share too.Kurds will demand the Turkish Kurdistan too, then Syrian Kurdistan. What goes around, comes around.

I am not a Kurd as i have said many times, even if i was what is wrong with being a Kurd? Do you choose your nationality when you are born? Turkey is not the country of only Turks, but everyone who is a citizen of Turkey, be it Kurds, Armenians, Turks, Albanians, Greek etc. You just show your narrow-mindedness right now. You live in Holland, but the country grants you every right that you could ever wish of. They give you a roof above your head and monthly payment EVEN though you are jobless. You should be the last one to discriminate against certain peoples. And stop trying to equal Kurds with PKK, because that is bs. I don't have anything against Kurds having an independent state in Northern Iraq, in fact with the current developments Turkey is exporting a lot of products, building constructions and roads as we speak. The Kurdish government in the North allows this and welcomes Turkish businesses in their country. But the central Iraqi government behaves like some @ss against Turkey. We need to raise the living standards in East Turkey and North Iraq. Terrorism will start vanishing once people's level of prosperity raises.

Thats why they are hypocrite in everything. Defending a kurdish ground on Iraqi territory because they live their more then 1000 years means that they will automaticly have right for ground on Syrian, Turkish, and Iranian territory. Isnt this traitorship?

What are you talking about suddenly dude? We was talking about the grounds who it belongs to. You always to manouvre your contradiction with anti nationalism theories. Just stay on topic. You said that kurds have the right for a indepented state because they live their more then 1000 years so they have the right to devide Iraqi ground. But this argument also will be used on Turkey because its the same matter.

Before accuse other people with nonsense, read your own comments and see your own contradiction. And yes you are a kurd.
