TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Navy started a series of wargames in the country's Southern waters on Friday to test its capabilities to defend Iran's water borders and regional interests.
The wargames, codenamed 'The Great Naval Wargames of Velayat 91', will last 6 days and will cover around one million square kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz to the waters up to the 18-degree latitude.
Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari told reporters on Friday that the naval drills will be carried out in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman, north of the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.
"Among the aims of the drill is to display the capabilities of Iran's Armed Forces and the Navy to defend our country's water borders and interests in line with establishing durable security in the region and conveying the message of peace and friendship to the neighboring states," the commander said.
He said that the Velayat 91 drill also sends this message to enemies that the Iranian nation seriously defends its vital interests in all areas, in particular in free waters.
Sayyari also said that the maneuver seeks to boost the Navy's tactical and operational capabilities and added that during the maneuver the 23rd fleet of the Navy, comprised of Bushehr warship and Jamaran destroyer, will escort Iran's merchant vessels and oil tankers as part of the navy's mission to fight piracy.
He added that the exercises will test missile and defense systems, combat fleets and submarines, and will also include combat training, maritime patrol and reconnaissance and combating threats.
Last month, Sayyari had said that the naval drills would even be more massive and cover a vaster area than the previous exercises.
Late in December 2011, the Iranian Army's Navy staged 10-day wargames, dubbed as Velayat 90, to test its latest achievements in the fields of missile technology and sub-surface vessels.
The wargames were conducted in an area stretching from the East of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden.
Navy conducted test-firing long-range missiles from coasts and navy vessels.
Different types of short and long-range coast-to-sea, surface-to-surface, surface-to-air missiles were tested by Iranian vessels. Iranian submarines also launched smart torpedoes.
