Visiting Deputy Health Minister of Iran Seyed Mohammad Hadi Ayazi on Friday said his country is going to set up a hospital in Cox’s Bazar to provide the Rohingya people with the healthcare services.
The deputy minister made the announcement while talking to reporters at a press briefing the Hotel Amari in the capital in the morning.
President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society Dr Ali Asghar Peyvandi accompanied the minister during the briefing.
Ayazi said that given the emergency medical needs of the Rohingya camps, Iran has decided to establish a hospital and five mobile medical clinics there.
Terming the overall situation of Rohingya cams is terrible; he said there are over 24,000 pregnant women besides children and elderly people in the camps.
They need emergency medical supports, otherwise humanitarian disaster can break out in the camps any time, he added.
The Iranian leader said the health ministries of the Bangladesh and Iran have already appointed their representatives to coordinate the work for establishment of the hospital.
“We are waiting to get land to establish the hospital and once the government allotted the land we will start our work in full swing,” he continued.
He also said the language will not be an issue in the hospital and clinics as some 500 Bangladeshi doctors who worked in Iran and know Persian language will be employed there.Besides, more Iranian doctors and medical professionals will also work with them in the hospital and clinics, he said.
When asked whether they have any plan to take Rohingya refugees to Iran, he said Iran has already been overburdened with more than three million Afghan refugees besides a significant numbers of Kuwaiti, and Iraqi refugees.
However, Iran will continue its humanitarian supports for Rohingyas and stand besides Bangladeshi government in this regard, he continued. “My country will also continue creating pressure on Myanmar through international community for repatriation of the Rohingyas,” he maintained.
He went on saying that Iran is working hard to encourage international community including China and Russia to play role in resolving the Rohinya crisis.
Iran wants international community to intensify and continue their pressure on Myanmar and all the countries come forwards to solve the crisis, he said.
Ayazi said that apart from his government, Iranian people are also demonstrating to mount pressure on the government for taking proper steps over the issue.
“As many international players are active in the crisis, Iran would like to solve the crisis with the participations of all of them,” he continued.
The President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society said they have come here to witness the plight of the Rohingya refugees for themselves.
“After visiting the area, we can identify three major problems—lack of nutrient foods and portable water, unhygienic environment, lack of adequate medical center for women, children and elderly people,” he added.
Citing any contagious disease could break out there any time, the president said Bangladesh government and other international organizations are trying their best but there is still a lot to do for the displace people.
He said that Iran has so far sent some 100 tonnes relief goods including foods, mates, medicines and tents for Rohingyas in three phases.
Over the hospital, he said though it’s difficult to find a piece of land there, Iran hopes the Bangladesh government will be able to allot the desired land to set up the hospital very soon.
On a three-day visit, the deputy health minister and the president of the Iranian Red Crescent Society arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday on a 15-member delegation.
