Managing Director of the National Iranian Copper Industry Company (NICICO) has announced the production launch of copper cathodes at Iran's Meidook Complex in the southeastern province of Kerman.
Ardeshir Saad Mohammadi said the Meidook Copper Cathodes Plant, which has already started production, will be officially inaugurated in the near future with the presence of senior Iranian officials.
He added that Meidook is the first copper cathodes plant to have been built outside the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex after the1979 Islamic Revolution.
The Meidook Copper Cathodes Plant will produce five thousand tons of heap leach copper with 99.95 percent purity.
Saad Mohammadi said the USD 53-million project has been implemented by Iranian experts, adding that the Meidook Copper Mine will provide the raw material for the plant.
On Sunday, Ali Akbar Mehrabian, a special assistant to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said Iran is set to improve its global ranking in the copper production industry to the worlds 7th in the current Iranian year (started March 20).
This year, with the expansion of exploration activities, re-opening of mines and the outlook for discovering 21 million tons of pure copper reserves in the country, Iran's copper industry will improve by two notches to stand as the worlds number 7 in the field, he said.
Iran's last standing was the worlds 9th with 18 million tons of pure copper, Mehrabian added.
Iran is among the worlds 10 leading mineral-rich countries and exports its industrial and mineral products to 159 nations, including Iraq, China, the United Arab Emirates, India and Afghanistan.
The Islamic Republic holds 68 types of minerals, including chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, tin and iron. It has 37 billion tons of proven reserves and more than 57 billion tons of potential reserves of minerals.
