TEHRAN: Iran’s deputy oil minister, Ali Majedi, said Monday that Pakistan must finance its part of the pipeline that would enable it to buy gas from the neighbouring country.

Majedi’s remarks come after Pakistan’s Oil Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi asked Iran to stump up $2 billion to finish the construction of the pipeline.

The $7.5-billion project launched in 2010 has drawn threats of US sanctions and run into repeated problems, including major financing issues.

We did not make such a commitment to help Pakistan with $2 billion for the construction of the pipeline,” Majedi said, quoted by Fars news agency.

He argued that based on initial agreements each side “must bring its own share” in financing the project, adding the “Pakistanis need Iran’s gas and they should accelerate their work.”

Construction on the Iranian side of the border is almost complete, but Pakistan has run into repeated problems financing the 780-kilometre section to be built on its side.

Investors and other governments are reluctant to get involved in the project because of the threat of breaching international sanctions against Iran.

Once completed, the project which aims to ease Pakistan’s chronic gas and electricity shortages would allow Iran to export 21 million cubic metres of gas per day.

Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zangeneh said last week he had “no hope” for the gas supply deal with Pakistan because of the financial problems.

Zangeneh’s comments prompted his Pakistani counterpart to insist the project would be completed and there was “no chance to abandon the pipeline project, because we need it”.

Iran, which has the world’s second-largest gas reserves, currently produces about 600 million cubic metres (21.2 billion cubic feet) of gas per day, almost all of which is consumed domestically.

Its only foreign client is Turkey, which buys about 30 million cubic metres per day.

well iran, good bye to the gas deal

seek other buyers

Main issue is the price of gas and cost of pipeline construction is secondary issue.
According to estimates, the pipe line construction costs is calculated as $500 million but Asif Ali Zardari trolled Iran with a promise of staggering $2 billion, award in favour of Iranian company... where as Sharif has his personal interests to take care, instead of working for Zardari's commission.

I don't know why Iran keeps refusing to finance the oil pipeline. Pakistan is taking all sort of flak just for saying Asalamu-Alaikum to Iran but the Iranians are too busy financing trouble in the Arab World instead.

buyers? don't you mean aid sources to fund your side of it too?

i think your IQ is too low to concieve the concept of business and trade?

if you call this aid, then what about japanese aid to make dehli metro, american aid to provide jobs to poor hunger striken indians :azn:

its all business buddy aid is which is given unconditionally without involving one's interest for the sole purpose of helping humanity

There is no " concieve" or rather "conceive" of business and trade missed here. When you ask someone else to pay for your share, it is called AID.

The Japanese did not give AID to India, they invested in india so as to bear fruit from it. You can't bear bear fruit from a consumer that cannot pay its bills. Japanese are investing in indian infrastructure because they know Japanese products will flourish in India then. i.e. India is going to be a long flourishing economic market market for them that CAN AFFORD TO PAY ITS BILLS!

What the iranians are saying is - please don't ask us to aid you, if you need us to pay for the pipeline, and you have no money for it- how will you pay your gas bills - since your economy depends on IMF aid?

Speaking of quote "low IQ". You claimed this to be a humanitarian project after you claimed it to be "business and trade" - a humanitarian project is not business and trade. So decide if this is humanitarian project for Pakistan or business and trade.

Why does Pakistan always depend on freebies? Or beg for stuff at concessional rates? From the U.S. to China and now Iran! But they have enough money to finance the JuD? For example, recently, the government allocated Rs. 61 million in the budget for current fiscal to the JuD!

Besides this grant-in-aid of over Rs. 61 million in its budget for fiscal 2013-14 the Punjab government has allocated Rs. 350 million for setting up a so called "Knowledge Park" at the centre and other 'development initiatives'!!

What is this 'knowledge park' run by banned organisations? This is just a cover. Most of the money is going to go into funding the LeT and their sister groups sponsoring terror.

And now Pakistan is asking Iran to finance its project as it has no money!! Jeeez! Wrong priorities?

Patwari has bowed down to US & he is going to obey everything US will say.
