TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran and Pakistan are seeking to develop mutual economic cooperation, Pakistan's Consul General in Iran's Northeastern Mashhad City Habib Abdulrahman said, adding that Tehran-Islamabad bilateral relations have experienced an eye-catching growth in recent years.
"Given the two countries' cultural, religious and economic proximity, the two states' leaders are resolved to further develop these relations" to match their political ties, Abdulrahman said.
He said despite the global economic crisis, Iran and Pakistan should endorse fruitful agreements and memoranda of understanding to further develop their economic ties.
The Pakistani official said bilateral trade exchanges total $1bln, but the two sides intend to raise the figure to $ 5bln in the near future.
Noting the efforts made by Tehran and Islamabad to expand mutual economic cooperation, he said two more border crossings will be opened in the next 6 months to facilitate exchange of visits by the two countries' nationals and traders.
He also said Pakistan would hold a fair in Mashhad City in coming days to present its products.
Iran has already held its first fair in Pakistan in June.
Abdulrahman said providing simple mechanisms to resolve traders' problems would lessen challenges and increase trade cooperation.
Also senior Iranian and Pakistani economic officials, in a meeting in Washington in April explored avenues for the further expansion and development of the two countries' economic ties and cooperation.
In their meeting on the sidelines of the 2012 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in Washington, Iranian Economy Minister Seyed Shamseddin Hosseini and Pakistani Minister of Economic Affairs and Statistics Abdul Hafeez Shaikh called for enhanced mutual ties in all fields.
Iran and Pakistan have always had very close and intimate relations throughout the history.
The two countries exchange delegations on a regular basis and their leaders are resolved to further accelerate expansion of ties and cooperation between the two neighboring nations.
