Azerbaijan, Baku, March 25 /Trend M. Moezzi/

Iran has become one of seven countries in the world to produce biofuel, the IRIB website reports.

Currently, only the U.S., Brazil, Sweden, Norway, China and India are biofuel producers.
Iran produced a sample of biofuel six months ago and is preparing to start its production. Located in the Khuzestan Province's Haft-Tapeh, a new 10,000 liter capacity biofuel facility will begin operating in the near future.

Iran's biofuel, or bioethanol, is to come from the 12 million tons of sugar cane it plants in the south. Until now it used the fibrous material left behind after sugar cane is crushed, called bagasse, as animal feed or to produce paper.

But there is a downside. Biofuels make food expensive since they compete with food production.

Kind'a yes, US is facing such problems as the farmers getting more profit by making alcohol from corn and sugarcane. Thus taking its toll on the food availability and prices.

While in India, Jatropa is grown in barren lands, so no such problems in India.

I'm sure in a week we will have an article in Ny. Times or Washington Post about how bio-Fuel a double use technology and how Iran is going to produce "weapon of mass bio-fuel" and then there will be quotes from some unnamed expert on the field that say Iran is one of the major producer of fossil fuel and it show they don't need these sorts of double use technologies and it's the proof of a clandestine weapon program behind this development .
